In February, I had an opportunity to fly down to Baja California to a spot just an hour and a half south of Loreto. My son and I spent a few days in a small Fishing village named Lopez Mateo. We found a quiet town that offered whale watching, sportfishing and many areas to hike and explore. We were so impressed with the resource, the infrastructure committed to tourism, and the many activities available.
The domestic flight from Tijuana direct to Loreto made the travel very simple. At the small airport, we were greeted by shuttle vans to escort us to Lopez Mateo an hour and 20 min away. From there, we lodged in Lopez for three days and enjoyed incredible whale watching. We had a chance to actually pet the whales with the professional guides on board. The local boats were very well kept, safe and comfortable. The whaling is done in the calm waters of the Mangroves where the cows and calves are getting ready for their next migration. We spent a half a day with the whales. We could have easily done the whaling most of the day but wanted to keep exploring.
Our next day was spent sportfishing in the Mangroves. We had live bait to fish with on a comfortable, well-kept boat. The guides have a lot of experience and put us on a variety of inshore fish. We found this to be worthy of at least a full day and were tempted to spend another day fishing through the miles of Mangroves. Again, decided to keep exploring.
The following day we cruised south 25 miles to Puerto Magdalena. We spent the day hiking up to Santa Maria Bay after a fresh seafood lunch. The lunch was incredible, with fish, shrimp and Chocolate clams all local and fresh. The restaurant and town of Puerto Magdalena was straight out of a history book. The easy hike to the long sandy beach of Santa Maria Bay took the afternoon and we were back up to Lopez Mateo by dark after another majestic cruise up the mangroves.
After this experience, I thought how special it would be to do this on a sportfishing yacht.
I have scheduled four 4 day trips on The Red Rooster III next February. We will offer these activities in the pristine waters of Magdalena Bay from the comfort and security of 105 foot luxury Sportfisher.

The cruise will include all amenities onboard with breakfast, lunch, afternoon appetizers and dinner. All meals the same incredible cuisine that we have on all sportfishing trips all year round on The Red Rooster III.
There are 15 staterooms available with daily turndown service included. Each stateroom has accommodations for two with two rooms accommodating four. The two four person rooms will be great for families with kids.
The itinerary will include a morning of whaling, a day of fishing and a day on Magdalena Island. Crew onboard will provide escort on various activities as needed. This is a great opportunity for couples and families.
