We managed to scratch out a day on this wahoo.

The action was better in the morning but
we definitely hooked our fair share of fish through out the day.

The loses were just very high.

We will give this a try tomorrow and hope for a morning hit before
we look for some tuna.

Nov. 3, 2016

We managed to scratch together a decent day here.
We are going to stay for tomorrow and see if this holds up

Conditions seem like they are trying to improve here. We have a couple of wahoo for the morning. We are going to sit here a while longer and see what happens.

Nov. 2, 2016

It was a long day of looking today. We finally connected with some wahoo just before sunset. We are going to slide further south tonight and hope there's better action tomorrow.

What a change a couple of days makes. After a blazing hot couple of weeks fishing out of Puerto Vallarta this local offshore weather feels down right cold! We had a busy turn around yesterday for our annual Charkbait 8 - day trip. We get a nice load of sardines from the bait dock and headed south. We will spend the first day traveling. A fishing seminar will be given mid morning and then the rest of the day will be dedicated to getting rigged up.
Thanks to Charkbait ...for the gift cards, t - shirts, and goodie bags.

Oct. 30, 2016

We have been making good speed on our ride up. The weather has been great, and we all know how enjoyable a calm ride home is.
Our eta to US customs is 0800-0830 so hopefully we can be at the Lee Palm sportfishing dock by 0900-0930. Hopefully.

Oct. 28, 2016

Nice traveling weather so far on our ride up from PV, but we still have a long way to go. Hopefully we can make the Cape at a reasonable time and make our first turn towards home. I will post an eta for San Diego in a day or two.

They don't bite as well....
We will keep trying
Tough day here with watching fish that don't bite .Matt Smith pulled it off at the end of the day with this 308 pound yellowfin on a Cavallito with the Accurate Calstar combo.
Matt looks to be getting a brand new Accurate thanks to Jack Neilson.
We ate going to fish tonight and see if that's when we can catch a few

Oct. 20, 2016

This water temp sure makes for a hot day on the water.
We have made a few stops on small fish.
Nothing to report at lunch time.
It's starting to look like it is a night fishing thing.
We are going to cover more area this afternoon and see if we can come up with anything worthy

We got everyone on board last night and happy to get started .
We fish for bait and purchased bait from the locals.
It was a very nice experience the Panga fisherman were very polite and conducted business very professionally.
I would recommend getting bait from them to anyone.
We made it up to the offshore grounds and hour before daylight and had a little sign with 4 fish hooked but only one landed....
153 pounder .
We had another that looked good at color at least high hundreds.
Anyway just getting situated here and on the move .
No bites after daylight.
We will post later

Oct. 5, 2016

Good evening anglers. After our few handfuls of yellowtail this morning it was a lot of looking for minimal return and with the wind kicking up we opted for some light line bass fishing... which wasn't as good as we would of liked but we got a few for sure. With the wind dying down and food weather ahead for tomorrow I think we're going to run up and fish along the beach somewhere before breaking down for the trip wish us luck
Derek Waldman

Still traveling up this afternoon after a brief stop this morning for a few handfuls of yellows it's blowing about 18 knots now and we should be in a nice lee side of an island in a couple of hours... until then it's going to be a little choppy

Yep it's pretty much a goner so going to have to stop having night bites I guess in order to get decent pictures for you guys. None the less we came across a good breezer in the wind here late and it stuck with us for about an hour maybe a little longer but we had wide open fishing from about 6 till after sunset then it tapered off and now we're working up the line to search for yellowtail tomorrow. Wish us luck

Solid morning with not much current to speak of but we're super thankful that the fish don't seem to care

Oct. 3, 2015

Some good action today with a couple good Dorado and a couple nice stops on this tuna here a lot of time spent looking around today as the weather started to get a little windy throughout the day but we managed to string it together quite well this afternoon were hoping for better current tomorrow morning wish us luck
Derek Waldman

Good afternoon gang still nice weather so far so
we're liking that and the fishing was good this morning

Solid morning so far with a few handfuls of fish keeping us busy so we're stoked on that and the wind is starting to pick up a little so probably give this a half a day then slide down somewhere else

Oct. 1, 2016

had quite the amazing day here today with constant action all day long with a little lull from about 1-3 but other then that it was pretty epic, good weather and good company always make for a great day. We had a few stops here late but I really wanted that one more stop so no pictures from the last few but the wahoo really turned on just before dark. As always in wahoo fishing we had are share of heart breaks but with perseverance and determination everyone managed to use quite a few tags today. It's supposed to get a tad bit windy tomorrow so we're go name hang tight on the anchor tonight and try again tomorrow and hope for the same results. Wish us luck
Derek Waldman

30 more miles to go till we get to the grounds this morning so double checking all the gear and good spirits throughout waiting with great anticipation to see what's there ....

Another great night and day of fishing

Picking at the wahoo this morning. Mostly on the drift. Not to many strikes.

We were up until midnight catching yellows. After midnight it slowed down but what a great run that was. Nice fish , the tuna were all that 25 plus pound fish and good grade yellowtail.

Sept. 19, 2016

After we got the anchor down we had great fishing on these school size tuna from 12 to 30 pounds. We caught fish right up until dark. A few nice bull Dorado in the mix as well. We are anchored up and will try for yellows tonight and hope for more wahoo and tuna tomorrow

We are headed south again. Maybe we can scratch at a few tuna down at the next spot.

We had a nice ride up and will be at the dock tomorrow at 6:30. We are going to try and depart for the next trip at 10:30 am

We had a scratchy morning with just a few here and there working are way up the beach. We finished strong with a nice hit in the afternoon with these quality yellows from 25 to 32 pound fish. They all hit us at once and came out of nowhere with great surface action until dark. A real nice finisher for the day

Sept. 14, 2016

We are headed up and will be trying for yellowtail tomorrow.

We should be up in the area by late morning.

We managed the Jack Pots for the trip on wahoo. But we are going to weigh them at the dock. We are headed up to the upper end of the ridge and try and get a couple more jig strikes.

Sept. 13, 2016

Excellent weather here today and hoping for a little wahoo action tomorrow

We had a real nice morning on yellowfin tuna and picked off a couple of wahoo. The tuna action was great and decent fish from 15 to 25 pounds. The sharks have been a real problem there and at lunch time it looked like we had caught what we were going to catch. Still a lot of fish just hard to get through the sharks. We are headed down the ridge for the afternoon

Good morning folks. We made really good time coming down and will be fishing at 7:30. A nice sunrise from the Red Rooster

Sept. 9, 2016

We had a tough morning with sign of yellow that were tough to catch. We made another move up and had a nice shot on 25 to 38 # yellowtail

Sept. 8, 2016

The conditions changes for the worse and made for tough fishing on the beach today. Cold water and sign of fish that were hard to catch. Things looked hopeful before lunch and then fell on it's face the rest of the afternoon.  We are headed up and are going to give Cedros a look in the morning

Sept. 7, 2016

Our evening group stop at the Island had a mix of throw back fish and a dozen or so decent yellows in the mix to keep us busy. We are headed south looking for action on yellows and whatever else we may find. Nice weather today and looks great for tomorrow

Our travel down today produced action on a couple kelps for 32 decent size Dorado. We had to throw back quite a bit of small fish in the process but it was nice to pick off a couple kelps.

Sept. 6, 2016

Jackpots for the charkbait 5 - day trip.
Mark Mine with a 92.9 lb Bluefin
Lou Sumarinas with a 91.6 Bluefin
Jason Duggar with a 90.8 Bluefin
Troll jp was won by Phil Bailey 90.5 Bluefin

Sept. 5, 2016

Good fishing here again today. The wind came up at lunch time and we had a hard time hanging on the anchor. That wasted some fishing time. Thankfully we are back at it and are currently fighting three tuna. Hopefully we can land them.

Tom Ferrari

Today was another great day of anchor fishing. We captured 51 of these beautiful size tuna. The hot rig the last couple of days has been the smaller reels, accurate boss 500, okuma makaira 10, a stiffer rod like a calstar 700h or 800h, 30-40 izorline mono and a short leader of matching seaguar florocarbon. The best hook size has been the 1/0 . A smaller hook seems to make a difference. We are staying here for the last day of our trip. Hopefully we can finish up strong.

Sept. 3, 2016

Started scratching here late morning. We were steady for a couple of hours but now it's gone cold. Hopefully it will pick back up again soon

Sept. 2, 2016

We had a really enjoyable day fishing for these 60-90 pound Bluefin tuna. For most of the afternoon we has 5-6 fish hooked up. Most of the bites we on the 30-40# line so the fights were long. We managed to tag 45 fish for our efforts. Some of the guys had a hard time getting bit, but that's how this anchor tuna fishing can be. Hopefully today brings more chances for everybody.
Tom Ferrari

Sept. 1, 2016

Jackpot winners for our 3 day trip. 1 St place with an 99.0 lb Bluefin tuna is Mark Wilson (on right). Second place is Nick Hollister (center) with a 89.45 lb Bluefin tuna. 3 rd place is Scott Hennessey with a 88.1 Bluefin.

Aug. 31, 2016

Scratch fishing out here today on this good grade Bluefin. It sure felt like we were catching a lot of fish, at some points of the day we had 5-6 fish going, but our count doesn't reflect that. There was plenty of lost fish, as you would expect with light tackle tuna fishing. The group really fished hard and put in plenty of rail time. It's always fustrating when the hard work doesn't pay off like you think it should. The fish we did catch were all nice grade with a couple of jackpots in the mix.

Tom Ferrari

Aug. 30, 2016

We are just getting started on our 3 - day open water trip. Hopefully we can stay busy on this Bluefin. The conditions are very nice. Light wind and a trickle of North west current.

Aug. 29, 2016

Oldenkamp 3 day jackpots as follows:
From left to right 4th place with the coveted Red Rooster III jacket is Chad Scheenstra with a 64.5# Bluefin tuna
3rd place goes to JT Reitsma with a 70.4# Bluefin tuna
2nd place goes to Omar Ortiz with a 71.1# Bluefin tuna
And 1st place goes to Craig Struikmans with a 79.6 Bluefin tuna
Thanks again guys for a great trip had a hell of a good time can't wait to do it again next year. Have a safe drive home
Derek Waldman

Aug. 28. 2016

That's it gang for the annual Oldenkamp charter. What a great trip we've had with a lot of fun with friends and family not to mention a little bit of excellent fishing in between the laughs and good times that were had by all. Sorry to have to say it but we're heading home and we will be in tomorrow morning at 7 : 00 am . This afternoon the fishing slowed down a bit due to this 20 knots of breez we had out here but that didn't stop some of these fish to bite and there was action for those willing to brave the wind and light line. See you all in the morning.
Derek Waldman

Staying busy all afternoon again today a little more wind then yesterday but fishing is still good and
it's still this awesome 40# grade with a few bigger models mixed in

Aug. 27, 2016

Father and son team Johnny and Jake Vermar bending here late

Slow goin this afternoon but still getting a bite every 15-20 minutes and with a lot of it around were hanging tight picking one off here and there on light line and the kite so hoping they wake up here soon

Well miss Texas strikes again this time with one of these 80# class Bluefin on 30# test nice job JT hard work pays off. Nate here with the assist

Curtis with a nice one on his 20# set up
Preston with more quality yellowfin here. There biting a little bit with a lot around the boat this mid morning so we will take the pick bite over no bite any day. But for the amount around you'd think they'd be a little more eager maybe when the current picks up it might get better.
Derek Waldman

Curtis with a token yellowtail here

Tom and Nick with a couple more
Chad and JT aka miss Texas with a couple

Johnny and Craig

Jake and Omar with a pair of 25# yellowfin

Evan with a bft

Bloody but yummy he says

Well folks young John Oldenkamp got a mini cow here... Tough morning with few bites on these baby giants but everyone is having a good time with them so we're saving the bigger ones for later
Derek Waldman

Good morning folks today is way different then a few days ago out here we've got 4 for the morning so far all 12-15# ers so hopefully the big ones come through soon
Derek Waldman

Aug. 26, 2016
