Oct 1 2002
Good morning folks. We are arriving at Alijos rocks this morning at 7:30 am.
We will report later on how the day goes. We have good weather and high hopes,
We will see you later, Andy Cates
Oct 2 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was a bit slower at the Rocks than it has been.
We did manage to scratch throughout the day. With fish boiling around the boat
all day, it made you think that at any minute they might break loose. Not the
case. The fish average from 45 to 90 pounds. We also picked up 7 wahoo and a
couple of nice yellows while fishing on the anchor. So far this morning things
are similar to yesterday right now we have 25 tuna and 5 wahoo so hopefully it
will break open this afternoon. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates
Oct 3 2002
Good morning, We kept fish going almost the whole day. With a few hits here
and there to keep the interest up. Nice grade of fish here at the rocks. You
sure don't see much around they just kind of gather up and start to feed. No
schools to be seen. The squid fishing last night was unreal. Floating on the
surface a bite on every cast. Needless to say we have a good load of kite
baits for the day. Hopefully the fish will show up again for us. We will
report again tomorrow, Andy Cates
Oct 4 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was another day of scratch fishing at the Rocks.
Today there were less fish caught on the sardine which made it tough unless
you were on the kite or balloon. The fishing was a bit slower than the day
before but we still managed to scratch out 46 tuna and 6 wahoo for our
efforts. With already a nice catch on decent size tuna we decided to go into
the Ridge in hopes of action and variety. There is another boat on the upper
end of the Ridge so we will leave that to him. We will start on the '23'
fathom spot and work down to Thetis bank if need be. The water is warm outside
the bank 79 degrees right now 20 miles outside the 23. Hopefully we will find
something good in here. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates
Oct 5 2002
We ended up down at Thetis bank for an afternoon of scratch fishing on decent
size yellowtail. The only wahoo we found on the ridge was in travel were we
picked up two. The yellowtail and tuna sign on the ridge was pretty poor. We
decided to spend today offshore looking for logs or kelps with wahoo or
dorado. So far this morning we have had no luck. Hopefully we find the mother
load soon. We will report again tomorrow.

Oct 6 2002
Good morning folks, Yesterday ended up to be an action packed afternoon. After
spending the better part of the day looking for something floating. We got a
call from the Royal Star on a school of Dorado just a few miles below us. We
got there in time to experience some wide open dorado fishing. After a couple
of hours the folks had enough and we spent the rest of the evening looking for
tuna. We did come across a couple different areas were there were some tuna
they just did not want to bite or there was just a little bit there. We will
be at the 13 fathom spot tomorrow. We will report again then, Andy Cates
Oct 7 2002
Good morning folks. We had a nice day of fishing yesterday. After a night bite
on 15 to 20 pound yellowtail, we trolled around in the hopes of a couple
wahoo. It didn't happen. There is quite a bit of small tuna around on the 13
fathom , which made things a little tough. Later in the morning we put
together a nice pick on 18 to 35 pound tuna that eventually turned into all
good grade fish. The green back mackerel seemed to make a difference on
getting the bigger tuna. After a very fun morning we decided to go up
and spend the afternoon at the Hutchinson bank. We stayed there till dark with
not much for our efforts. This morning we are on our way to Chester's Rock for
hopefully some trophy yellowtail. Also sounded like good fishing on bird
schools in this area. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates
Oct 8 2002
Good morning folks. We finished of at Benitos Island last night. Not very much
sign of fish at the island. Although fishing was very good at Cedros and
finished us off for the trip. Most of the yellowtail were 15 to18 pounds and a
pretty good sign of them. We took off a little early in the evening to watch
Monday night football which was very relaxing then we started heading up. We
are going to finish off at San Martin and try for Halibut again. We did catch
one yesterday at Cedros and had it for dinner. It was about 35 pounds so there
was more than enough to go around. We are going to spend the morning fishing
and then break down our gear and go home. Hopefully we get a few halibut for
dinner. We will report again later but if it doesn't get there in time our ETA
for tomorrow will be 8:00am, See you at the dock, Andy Cates
Oct 9 2002
Good morning folks, We left San Martin at noon yesterday and started heading
up. We only caught one keeper halibut for dinner but none the less it kept us
busy for the morning. West Coast anglers took a lot of pictures of the trip ,
any interest you have in those you can look up the web sight at
www.westcoastangler.com. I think you will enjoy some pictures of the trophy
fish caught on this trip. Give David a couple of days to put the pictures up.
Today we leave on another 10 day trip. Jeff DeBuys will be taking the boat out
this time . Good luck to you guys. See you in 10 days for the 14 day trip to
the Bank. Andy Cates
Oct 10 2002
Hello everyone, we just departed San Diego for the fourth annual Bluefin Jim's
10 day extravaganza. we have a good load of sardines so we are off to a good
start. After the usual safety orientation meeting all the passengers received
a goodie bag with all sorts of great tackle. Jim also raffled off a fishing
rod as well as some great wahoo trolling lures. The sponsors include Long fin
Tackle supply, Lead Masters, Catchy Tackle, as well as Tady Jigs. Today we are
traveling, and will be busy with tackle seminar and rigging everyone up with
the latest techniques in long range fishing. The weather is still perfect. We
don't have a destination to begin the trip yet, but maybe by the end of the
day something will develop. take care, and we will report later. Jeff DeBuys
Oct 11 2002
Good evening folks, we have a report for Oct 11th. We started the trip
offshore looking for kelps and any other thing floating, and had great fishing
on big dorado and some wahoo as well. The weather is great, and the guys
really had a fun time pulling on the bull dorado. The wahoo were a real bonus,
as we only caught 9 of them for the day. The plan for tomorrow is to
fish the ridge in hopes of finding some tuna or yellowtail. Glenn Kerr says hi
to all his buddies, and other than that, we don't have much to report. sea ya
later. Jeff DeBuys
Oct 12 2002
Good evening everyone, here is the report for Oct 12. Today we fished the
ridge all day starting at the lower end, and finishing at upper end. We had a
variety of fish today, wahoo, tuna, grouper, yellowtail, and some dorado we
released. The weather was breezy, but we still had pretty good weather for
fishing. we plan to stay here for at least one more day in hopes of getting in
on some more hot action. We will have another report for you all tomorrow. sea
ya then. Jeff DeBuys
Oct 13 2002
Good evening folks, it is Sunday and we have the daily report for you. We
spent the day on the ridge, and had a very nice day tuna fishing. The fish
were 25 to 40 lbs. with a few bigger ones mixed in. We were steady for hours,
with 5 to 8 going, making for a excellent day. We also scraped 85 or so
yellowtail to go along with a few grouper. All & all things look good down
here, and conditions are pretty good. the tuna were eating the green mackerel
as fast as you could cast one out. We are going to stay here for a half a day
in hopes of another bite half as good as today, and then go check out Alijos
rocks in hopes something has changed out there. Wish us luck, and we will
report again tomorrow. Sea ya, Jeff DeBuys
Oct 14 2002
Good evening everyone, here is the latest report for us. Today we spent the
day on the ridge again, and we managed to stay pretty busy with different
types of fish. The tuna didn't bite like yesterday, with only 45 fish going
into the hold. We did have absolutely wide open yellowtail fishing for a
while, and it was really a great time for the guys. Along with everything
else, we did manage to scrape 6 wahoo off this place, as it has been hammered
for quite some time. Things don't look very good at Alijos rocks, and we have
opted to run to Guadalupe Island in hopes of finishing the trip with some
quality yellowfin tuna. We will report tomorrow. sea ya. Jeff DeBuys
Oct 15 2002
Good afternoon everyone. Not too much to report today, as we are traveling to
Guadalupe Island in hopes of catching some quality yellowfin tuna. The
prospects at Alijos rocks are not very good, and has not been good for quite a
while now. We hope it changes in the next couple of weeks. We should arrive at
the island around 0200 and give us a chance to catch a tank of mackerel. The
weather is choppy today, hopefully better at the island. We will report again
tomorrow. Jeff DeBuys
Oct 16 2002
Good afternoon everyone, we finally made it to Guadalupe Island around 0300
this morning after a rather bumpy ride the last 25 hours. We tanked up on
greenies, and got the anchor down around 0430. Conditions were very good
at the south end, and we had a really nice day on the yellowfin tuna here. The
fish bit mackerel, and the sardines on 50 lb. line for most of the day. They
did shut off around 5 p.m., and the school seemed to have left us. We did end
up landing 91 tuna, from 50 to 100 lbs., most were 60 to 75 lbs. We have
packed and repacked our fish wells, and we are totally full at this point. It
was a great way to end our already excellent 10 day trip. We do have 2 more
days to fish, and we will try for some bass and trophy yellows here at the
island, if we can fit a couple fish in. The weather was extremely windy today,
and we hope it comes down for the ride back to San Diego. That is our report
for today. sea ya later. Jeff DeBuys
Oct 17 2002
Good afternoon folks, the report for today is as follows. We spent the day at
Guadalupe again fishing half heartedly for a little action ,mostly because we
are full, and we don't have any room left for fish. We did squeeze in 5 tuna
and 5 yellowtail. The guys spent the day mostly lounging in the sun, and
taking care of their gear. We had an exceptional trip, and a great time was
had by all. We will be back in San Diego on Saturday the 19th, at 0730. The
final tally for the trip is as follows: limit of tuna and the yellowtail,
dorado, and 21 wahoo, as well as 35 grouper filled out just about the rest of
our limit. We leave on a 14 day on Sunday the 20th, so wish us luck . sea ya
later, Jeff Debuys
OCTOBER 20 TO NOVEMBER 3, 2002 - 14 days - 22 Anglers - Fished - HURRICANE BANK
Oct 21 2002
Good morning folks. We left yesterday after getting a decent load of
sardines. This is a 14 day trip and was in the past the first trip down
to the Revillagigedos Islands. We are not going to see the Islands this
trip but the Hurricane Bank is a good prospect and has been a good
prospect the last couple of years at this part of the season. At this
time we are headed for Alijos rocks, mainly as a point of reference. We
don't have plans of fishing there maybe a stop for bait. Today we will
go over a few things this morning and then spend the rest of the day
getting gear out and rigging up. We have quite a few things in
preparation for the trip. Tomorrow will start our seminars on the tuna
fishing and then the next day Wahoo. The weather is very nice right now
and everything is running smooth. We will report again tomorrow, Andy
Cates
Oct 22 2002
Good morning folks. Not much to report today. We have good weather and our
bait looks fine. We did stop last night and topped off the freezer with squid
so we have plenty of that. Today we will go over tuna fishing and spend the
day rigging and answering questions, See you tomorrow, Andy Cates
Oct 23 2002
Good morning folks, another travel day with not much to report. Good weather
so far and with just a couple hundred miles to go. We are starting to feel the
heat. The water is 79 degrees and the air is the same. Bring out the shorts
and sandals. Rigging up for wahoo today , mostly safety aspects in the seminar
but also some key angling techniques. We will arrive at the Bank at 300 in the
morning . This will give us enough time to get bait and then set up for tuna
fishing. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates
Oct 24 2002
Good afternoon folks, we have made it to Hurricane Bank and so far it is hard
to say what is going to happen. it looks like we will be able to scratch. So
far It does not look like a load up situation. The fish that we have caught
have been decent size, biggest one about 190 pounds and a majority are just
under or just over a hundred pounds. The wahoo situation looks good its just
to rough to troll around. And we just don't see that much tuna so far. If the
weather gets better maybe things will shape up. Also there are not any sharks
and that alone gives us hope of putting together a catch. We will post another
report and pictures tonight for tomorrow, Andy Cates
Oct 25 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday afternoon turned out very nice for us. Even with
the poor weather we pulled out a very encouraging afternoon. We ended up
with 35 tuna and 30 wahoo for the day. Three fish 200 pounds or better
and another half a dozen that were 170 to 190 with an additional 20 fish in
the 100 to 150 pound range. Most of the bigger fish were on the kite with the
exception of just a few. Larry Martin picked one off with a skip jack
for bait. Chuck Forrester and Tim Farrel both first time long rangers
picked fish on the kite to join the 200 pound club and Joe stickles with
another one very close to the 200 pound mark.
This morning the weather is much better. 12 to 15 knots of wind at the most.
Hopefully we can continue to produce this grade of fish . Its what we were
looking for. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Good evening folks, yesterday was a little slower. We ended up scratching 25
tuna and 15 Wahoo. A couple of fish over 200 pounds and quite s few in the
high 100 pound range. It has potential here and hopefully it gets with it
while we are here. I have pictures of Joe Stickles, Chuck Forester and Don
Miller. Also one of John Fike with some stand out fish We will report again
tomorrow. Andy

Oct 27 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was slow and things were looking very poor. We
only had a few fish, one shown here caught by Tom Davis until about 400 in the
afternoon. The better size fish hit us good in the evening. We had 20 tuna out
of that hit. Which made 26 for the day. All the fish in the evening were good
ones. 110 to 160 pounds on the average. Just a couple of 80 pounders mixed in.
We did lose a couple of bigger fish, possibly 200 pounders. Larry Martin was
in a very unfortunate case were we lost one and another getting a backup on a
lighter outfit. So far this morning we have a handful of 100 pound and today
we see more wahoo around. Maybe things are moving back on the bank. We
will report again tomorrow. The other picture shows Robert Tyler and Chuck
Forester. Andy Cates

Oct 28 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday ended with 32 tuna and 23 wahoo. The Bank had
much better sign of life throughout the day. We picked Wahoo and tuna until
evening when we got a hit picking up 18 fish before dark.
Bill Schneider got this nice fish on sardine in the evening. Lynn Freed
picked this one off in the afternoon on the kite. Once again the grade is very
nice. We did see more 80 and 90 pounders mixed in today but still enough fish
over a hundred to make it good. So far this morning we only have a few tuna .
We did lose a big one at color this morning and also a few other decent fish
were lost as well. Hopefully we can make up for it this afternoon. We will
report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Oct 29 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday showed good sign of better size tuna right up
until dark. Unfortunately they were reluctant to bite. We had a pretty slow
day with 12 tuna and 20 wahoo for our efforts. It seemed like everything went
downhill after we lost that big one in the morning.
So far today we do have a couple of decent fish. One about 190 and another
about 170 . We see some sign so maybe later. We will report again tomorrow,
Andy Cates
Oct 30 2002
Yesterday was very slow for us. Although the sign of big fish is still here
they just won't bite. After an all day effort we ended up with 7 tuna and 7
wahoo. The couple of bigger fish were caught in the morning by Bob Michner and
Pat Wollenberg. Right when it looks like something might get going it
completely backs off. We left enough room for a couple of big ones this
morning. Unfortunately it never happened so we topped the wells off with
wahoo. Only 24 for the morning but it was all we needed. After a very
successful trip to the Hurricane Bank we are on our way home. The grade of
fish down here was what we look for on these trips and everybody had a shot at
trophy fish at one time or another. The fact that there were no sharks let us
fish all aspects and they all worked. Kite , Chunk , balloon and sardine,
Squid or flyer they all produced fish. Hopefully the next group that comes
down has the same success. The weather reports from above sound good we will
be home on Sunday at 800 in the morning. We will report again tomorrow, Andy
Cates
