June 2007

June 1st. 2007

We are down south at Hurricane bank and got there at 9am and trolled till noon and got 86 wahoo so far. We are planning on anchoring up and fishing tuna the rest of the afternoon. On the way down we had one stop and picked up 2 tuna over 200lbs - Erik Olson caught a 285lb and Mike butler with a 236lb, are contenders for brand new a boss accurate reel.

June 2nd. 2007

Well yesterday was a wahoo of a day.  By nightfall 120 of those speedy critters we landed.  The Tuna are here but they are not co-operating. One small fish about 100 lbs. was landed and there is good sign of the bigger fish but they just don't want to bite. This morning we had another bunch of wahoo and 2 tuna, a 100 lb. fish and one of those better grade that has been swimming around the bank.  Joe Arimitus fooled a 216 lb. into biting, that's a personal best for him.  The weather has improved as the wind has calmed so we have excellent fishing weather.  So we will wait here and hope the tuna co-operate.

June 3rd. 2007

We had another great day on the wahoo.  Final total was 75 for the day.  Tuna fishing continues slow with 5 tuna landed. Bob Rubalcabo was hot landing a 216lb. and 180 lb. So far this morning we have 17 more wahoo and 2 tuna.  Bob Cherry landed a 180 lb. fish but the sign of tuna that had been around has gone.  With the weather continuing to improve and 3 days left of fishing time we are going to try the 6 mile area around the islands.

June 5th, 2007

Yesterday all the action was in the morning.  After 2 PM the bite was over.  The tuna were found under "birds".  We would slide up on a school and try our luck.  Sometimes no biters and sometimes as many as 8 going on a stop.  We landed 11 yesterday most of the tuna are 125 to 160 lb. size.  Today has improved as we had our best hit at 4 PM and we have 40 fish for the day.  Most of the fish in the same size class as yesterday. Bob Cherry won an Accurate Boss 665 Reel for his big fish today.  After an epic battle which included a skiff ride, Bob landed a tuna which we estimate to be 256 lbs. We have one more day fishing 6 miles outside the islands.

June 25th, 2007

We departed on Friday for our annual late spring 8 day trip. We left San Diego with a great load of bait and headed straight down to the ridge. We arrived Sunday morning and fished all Sunday for excellent action on yellowtail, we also released marlin and black seabass throughout the day. Monday morning was some of the best yellowtail fishing you will ever see on 18-35 pound fish, all up on top biting with absolute recklessness. We have a group of true surface iron enthusiasts on board and it was as fast as you could go all morning long until we departed the shallows, needless to say they are in seventh heaven after what we all just experienced.

We departed to fish the ridge and headed south into 71. 0 degree purple water loaded with life, we are presently having great action on Small yellowfin tuna, Dorado and skipjack as we venture more to the west and towards our destination for tomorrow. This has been the perfect start to a spring 8 day trip and we are only 1/3 of the way through our fishing time, who knows with the conditions we are presently working in what the future will bring? Time will tell and we are looking forward to every minute. Our weather has been brochure perfect so far the entire trip and we hope it continues but will work with whatever the good Lord giver us, I will report back tomorrow night.

We changed our game plan last night at dark. Yesterday we found a tremendous amount of life offshore outside the ridge with 14- 20 pound yellowfin being caught on porpoise schools, kelp paddies and a very big area of jig strikes.

We found Dorado and even a WAHOO on various kelp paddies giving us the impression their could be that needle in the hay stack that we are always trying to find while offshore fishing. With the water temperature in the low seventies and the color a beautiful offshore blue and the weather in our favor we felt we had an above average chance to go looking offshore another day so after dark we slide South East another 35 miles and our presently working up the outside of the lower banks in search of that big bonanza, time will only tell what we come up with. This morning so far we have stopped on one kelp for a nice bunch of 10-20 pound Dorado, we will report back tonight with our findings, have a great day and please say a prayer us.

June 27th, 2007

The last couple of day's gave me the impression while fishing offshore that we where fishing on an eight or ten day trip in the fall. We had good tuna and Dorado jig strikes, we found both species on kelps, along with our lone kelp paddie wahoo and Yellowfin Tuna under porpoise. The tuna we caught yesterday where not the size we target under porpoise schools in the fall but nice 18-30 pound fish that at times gave us wide open action for short periods of time making for a productive day of offshore fishing complimented by limits of Dorado.

With a beautiful catch of excellent grade yellowtail aboard and our limits of Dorado along with a good catch of the school size tuna it was time to head out to Alijos and try for a few trophy's in hopes of some action on the better size Yellowfin Tuna. We arrived this morning at 0700 and are currently sitting on the anchor waiting for some current to get this party started, we will report back in the morning with the results of our first day hear at Alijos Rocks.

Yesterday here at Alijos Rocks was just what we where looking for after the action packed three days we spent on the inside, nice steady scratch fishing on yellowfin tuna in the 40 to 120 pound class from mid morning until early evening. This trip has shown our group of passengers pretty much all aspects of the long range experience and yesterday did not disappoint us filling out the final dimensions with good kite fishing for most of the afternoon. With the reports from here being on the slow side we did not have high expectations coming out, we were looking for a few quality fish to settle the jackpot and take the coveted Seeker Rod trophy which will go to the angler this trip that catches the largest fish on a Seeker Rod. Needless to say we where very pleased to find the type of action we did on this quality Alijos Rocks Yellowfin Tuna, as it stands this morning the bar is set at approximately 120 pounds if someone is going to take that Seeker trophy away from Jim Odlum who landed a beautiful kite fish mid day yesterday.

The final fishing time we have will be spent here at Alijos Rocks trying for more of this nice grade yellowfin tuna to complement our nice load of variety and quality fish already on-board, we will be depart after lunch today and start our 468 mile voyage toward home. I will report our final days fishing experience and the progress of our northern journey tomorrow morning, wish us luck on our final fishing day of this long range adventure.

I just wanted to send a quick update to today's fishing. We had very good scratch fishing on the same beautiful grade yellowfin tuna this morning from 0730 until we departed at 1230. What a fitting finish to just a great eight day late spring fishing trip, you could not have scripted this trip any better. We are currently traveling toward San Diego in good weather and will report back tomorrow with our ETA for Saturday morning at Lee Palm Sportfishers.

June 29th, 2007

Despite a two knot southerly current and choppy seas last night we will be on time arriving back into San Diego at 0800 hours tomorrow Saturday June 30 2007. The weather in the typical below Cedros to around the 29 latitude was a bit choppy (not rough) last night and early this morning but as I write this last update for this Seeker/Casper eight day trip our weather is much better and getting nicer as we travel north. WE are very pleased with the outcome of this long range fishing adventure as I have expressed in my posts the past five days, the fishing was not only exciting at times with wide open bites but we accomplished catching multiple species along with excellent quality Alijos Rocks Yellowfin Tuna.

I would like to thank Joe Phister President of Seeker Fishing Rods for the Seeker product giveaways along with Billy Casper and Brian Porter for being such wonderful on board hosts. Joe and Billy always put together a great group of anglers and this trip was no exception, the crew and myself thoroughly enjoyed the time we had with this great group of people and are extremely pleased that we had the good fortune on this trip of great timing to show our group a true long range fishing experience. We are looking forward to seeing all our family and Friends tomorrow back at Lee Palm Sportfishers at 0800.
