June 01 2003
Good morning folks. We spent most of our morning getting our gear out and in
order for the trip. With word of albacore at the 226 mile range we spent some
time rigging up and went over some basic tactics of albacore. For most of the
guys on the trip this was nothing new. After lunch we were in 'Albacore
Country'. After a couple of short stops we got into some that wanted to bite.
After a couple of drifts and enough albacore to get the rust of the anglers,
we decided to head to the Rocks and give it a look before heading down to the
Hurricane bank. We will be at the Rocks after lunch and spend the rest of the
day checking it out. Here are a couple of pictures of some pre season Red
Rooster III albacore caught by Chuck Wettgen and Earl Sandefur. The average
was about 25 pounds .Nice size fish for the most part. We will report
again tomorrow Andy Cates
June 2 2003
Good morning folks. We spent the afternoon at the Alijos Rocks. We did see
decent sign of fish and plenty of show around the boat, but they just did not
want to settle down and bite. Most of the attention from the fish was given
to the kite. With only 2 fish on the sardine and another 7 fish on the kite ,
we decided to keep going to Hurricane Bank. The fish at the Rocks were nice
size 50 to 80 pounds were the estimation on the few we landed. We made one
brief stop for squid and kept going. The weather below still sounds good . So
far no threat of hurricanes. We are hoping to get in a few days down here
before something does form. Wahoo seminar today and Hurricane Bank tomorrow.
See you then Andy Cates
June 4 2003
Good morning folks. We arrived at 1:00 PM and began picking up wahoo. Shortly
there after things slowed down. They seemed to stop biting just after 3:00 PM.
We got loosened up with few wahoo and began trying for tuna. By this time the
sharks were so bad you could barely get a bait in the water. We did manage to
get a couple of tuna through them. This one caught by Lynn Freed and another
smaller one Bob Tyler about 110 pounds. We did hook a couple of others but as
they got to color they were slaughtered by the sharks. We didn't even try
fishing on the anchor. The sharks are stacked up so thick on all corners of
the Bank. We had decent bait fishing last night we just have to figure out how
to use them today. The kite was un-fishable. The sharks would eat every bait 5
feet from the boat. Hopefully things are different her today. If not it could
be brutal We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates
June 05 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday was another battle with the sharks. We did
manage to get a couple of tuna. One on the kite and one on the troll. The
wahoo fishing kept us busy but the numbers were less today. The sharks seemed
to be multiplying and getting even more aggressive. By the end of the day they
were eating most of the wahoo, the Marauders and the casting jigs. We went as
far as 2 miles off the bank and experienced the same problem. The volume is
really unbelievable. Chris Kumai manage to sneak this wahoo in through the
sharks on a wahoo bomb. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

June 6 2003
Good morning folks We were able to sneak 20 tuna and 20 wahoo in today. The
sharks backed off and there was more sign of fish. The average size was 80 to
100 pounds. The weather is still very nice and we are hopping for better
results today. Most of the fish came on the sardine today which was nice for a
change. Maybe we will se a few bigger fish today. Maybe on the kite or
balloon. At this rate we will take what we can get. We will report again
tomorrow. Andy Cates
June 7 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday we were a few miles off the Bank were we had
caught fish the day before. The sharks were not a problem so we went back out
there to try again. We found an area just a few miles west of the bank that
really had some nice fish. Most of the fish were scattered out and would
gather on the
boat.
The most memorable stop was a school of 150 to 200 pound fish. When we came up
and hit it the whole stern erupted. Everyone had one on. Total chaos was more
like it. When the smoke cleared we had one fish close to 200, another 225 and
18 others over 150 pounds. The fish stayed up almost all day, we had some real
nice fish on the troll. One caught by Mike Bogart that taped out just over 200
pounds. We did have some other chances on cow fish that didn't work out but we
are hopping for another shot today. We ended up filling a good portion of the
slammer with tuna today. At least half were a hundred pounds or better. It was
a day we would love to repeat again. We also found a big log today and picked
up 20 wahoo. We put a flag on
it so we could check it today. Maybe some more wahoo will get on it. I put
some pictures up. Bud Mauerhan with a nice kite fish. Vern Brown with sardine
fish. John Young with a nice troll fish. Mike Bogart with a fish up there
around 200 pounds and Billy Wirth with the big fish of the day. Also a group
photo of one of the stand out stops. Hopefully we can get on that fish again
today we will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

June 8 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday was another great day. We started off early
looking for the fish we got on yesterday. Just after daylight we had a drift
for 10 fish all over a hundred pounds and one fish a little over 200 and
another one very close. After looking around we got on the school similar to
yesterday. We through scoops of sardine and the whole stern exploded. In a
matter of seconds everyone
had one on and chaos was about the boat just like yesterday. We saw nothing
but 150 to 200 pound fish blowing out in the corning and free swimming. After
we got stabilized we realized we had 20 fish going and 15 of them were pilled
up on the bow after an hour or so when the dust settled we had 16 fish 170 to
200 pounds. We ended up with 30 tuna for the day and after re-stacking the
fish holds found that we had no room left. We decide to go and look for the
log we found the other day and see if there were any more wahoo. Early
afternoon we found it and got 30 wahoo and crammed them in the cracks. We are
now on our way to Cabo. We will spend a day there and then go home. I posted
some pictures of some of the results from the day. Bob Tyler and Earl Sandefur
with a couple of nice fish. Also Mike Bogart with another nice and a couple of
group shots after the dust had settled. We will report again tomorrow, Andy
Cates

Good morning folks. We will be in Cabo at lunch time. The ride up has been
nice only thing is we are traveling in the trough. The swell hits us on the
side and makes the boat jerk around a little bit. We got everything cleaned up
and today we will start some projects in preparation for the summer season. We
are in range now for the television so most of the guys are picking up on
current events this morning. We will spend the night in Cabo and the guys will
fly home tomorrow. There were not any flights left for Monday so Tuesday will
have to do. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates
June 10 2003
Good afternoon folks We are now leaving Cabo. The six people that are flying
home are on their way. And our next stop will be San Martin Island. We are
going to try our luck at some Halibut fishing. All the folks had a good time
last night and are safe. The people that are flying home are Bob Cherry Mike
Faulkner Chris Kumai, Mike Bogart and Bill and Ernie Wirth. We wish them a
safe flight. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates
June 11 2003
Good morning folks. So far the ride has been very nice. We are below Thetis
bank and working up. We are going to work up the ridge all day . The Shogun is
up on the Uncle Sam Bank and has nice weather. We are hoping that it lasts. We
will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates
June 12 2003
Good morning folks. Another day of travel coming up the line brought us bumpy
water at times yesterday. San Pablo area finally brought us smooth water and
we are all enjoying it now. It hasn't been bad just a little uncomfortable at
times. Today we are going to spend some time at the south end of Cedros. Maybe
find some yellowtail or Halibut down in this area. The weather is flat calm
and if it holds should make for a nice day. We will report again tomorrow.
Andy Cates
June 14 2003
Good morning folks. We spent yesterday at San Martin trying for Halibut. We
only got a few but enough for dinner. This one posted was a 53 pounder on a
hand scale. Larry Martin and Tom Reynolds both caught this one. She ate two
baits. We will be in this morning at 830. We will see you then, Andy Cates

June 16, 2003
Hello everyone, here is the report for June 16. We departed San Diego
yesterday on the annual Bluefin Jim 5 day. We put a beautiful load of sardines
on board, as well as some choice anchovies. The weather is outstanding, as
well as the fishing today. The albacore were very cooperative, and we had a
very busy day. The grade of this fish is a solid 18 to 28 lbs., and most are
beauties. It was as good as it gets. Tomorrow we are going to try for some
yellowtail somewhere between Benitos and Cedros island. until then , take care
and wish us luck. sea ya , Jeff and crew
June 17, 2003
Good evening folks, here is a quick run down on the day. We started out at
Benitos island and had some fish right after daylight, but that quickly ended.
The rest of the day was spent at Cedros island as well as Natividad, for zero
on the yellows. We ended up back at Benitos for a couple of flurries before
the end of the day. Fishing was tough today for yellowtail. 35 fish for our
efforts. Tomorrow we will try for some more albacore and maybe some Bluefin
tuna .the weather is still beautiful. talk to everyone tomorrow. Jeff DeBuys

June 18, 2003
Good evening folks, the report for today is as follows. We spent the day
offshore and again we had outstanding albacore fishing. The fish were really
in the mood to "chew". I have to say the grade is really something as most
fish were 25 to 30 pounds. We had many release as everyone has plenty of fish.
We did pick up 6 Bluefin, 25 to 30 pounds as well. We have opted to spend our
last half day at Guadalupe Island, in hopes of some trophy Yellowtail.
The weather is still very nice and we hope it continues, Wish us luck, and we
will report again tomorrow. Sea ya, Jeff and crew.
June 19, 2003
Hello everyone, here is the report for today, June 19th. We elected to check
out Guadalupe Island in hope of some decent Yellowtail fishing, and things
looked good as far as conditions and sea temp. The fishing part was very slow
as we caught a handful of nice size Yellowtail for our efforts. Most people
were worn out from yesterday, and spent the day enjoying the beauty of the
island. Weather is not as we like it and it is a rough ride home. We
will be back in San Diego tomorrow at 0800 and will turn around on an 8 day
trip. Take care and we will report later on Saturday. Jeff and crew.
June 21, 2003
Hello everyone, here is the latest report. We departed San Diego on Friday
with a beautiful load of Sardines for our 8 day offshore Angler Unlimited
sponsored trip. We arrived at the fishing grounds around 10:00 AM and we ended
up with a very decent day on Albacore and Bluefin tuna. The Albacore are
18 to 25 lbs. and the Bluefin are 25 to 30 lbs. Good action for
everyone. The weather is a bit choppy, and we hope it comes down in the
next couple of days. We plan on being at Alijos Rocks tomorrow morning, if all
goes as planned. Today we are going to look for more Bluefin and Albacore.
Wish us luck on all the above, and keep a tight line. Sea ya, Jeff and Crew.
June 22, 2003
Good afternoon everyone, here is a short report for Sunday the 22nd. We had
good albacore fishing this morning right after daybreak, and then kept working
south for the rest of the day. We will be at Alijos Rocks in the morning just
after daylight. Things out there seem to be improving, and we hope to spend a
couple of days there trying for those Yellowfin and trophy Yellowtail. The
weather is good and we hope it continues. That pretty much wraps up our report
for today. Sea ya tomorrow, Jeff and Crew.
June 23, 2003
Hello everyone, the report for Alijos Rocks today is as follows. We arrived
today at 0600 and saw some sign right away on the yellowfin tuna, we anchored
and had a few tuna right away. I thought we could keep 1 or 2 hooked all day,
but I was wrong. Things slowed way down around lunch, and then picked up again
in the afternoon. We had some on the kite, as well as sardines. The grade
continues to be very good, 50 to 100 lbs. We are going to try tomorrow.
Today's tally: 30 tuna and 5 yellowtail, which were beauties. Wish us luck,
sea ya tomorrow, Jeff and Crew.

Hello everyone, here is the daily report for the 24th. Today started out
pretty much like yesterday, and ended the same. The early part of the
morning along with the late afternoon was the most productive for us. We again
had some action on the kite, as well as on sardines. I think overall grade of
the fish was better today, 60 to 100 lbs. on the Yellowfin. We are going to
spend half a day here tomorrow, and then make a move somewhere. The
weather is still good. Today's tally is 43 Yellowfin tuna and 14 Yellowtail.
Here are some pics from today. Talk to you all later, Jeff and Crew

June 26, 2003
Hello everyone, here is a quick report for today. We fished at the south end
of Cedros and had pretty good conditions in the morning. We scratched some
quality yellowtail before conditions fell apart. We had a few on jigs, as well
as mackerel. The fish were 25 to 40 lbs. and we ended up with 35 for our
efforts. We are headed offshore for tomorrow, and hope to bump into some
Bluefin or Albacore to end the trip. Wish us luck. sea ya , Jeff DeBuys
June 27, 2003
Good afternoon everyone, we are headed back to San Diego and will arrive at
the dock at 0700 sharp. We had a great morning on albacore today, and things
look promising for next trip, which is a 8 day as well. The weather is very
nice, and we hope it holds up as well. We had an excellent trip, and a lot of
fun. Half of the guys had never been to Alijos Rocks, and they will for sure
be back to visit them again. We have a 1300 departure tomorrow, so we will
have another report at the beginning of that trip. Sea ya then, Jeff and crew
June 29 2003
Good morning folks. We left yesterday on an 8 day trip. The bait situation
looks good and we feel pretty good the load we took on. So far this morning we
have been traveling. The weather is nice and we are looking forward to getting
in the area. We are going to spend the day in the albacore grounds and then
take it from there. We will have more to report on tomorrow. Andy Cates
June 30 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday was a nice way to get started. With a slow but
steady start on the albacore everyone had a chance to get loosened up and
learn the routine at the rail with each other. Up until the evening the fish
came on the longer drifts including one drift were we caught 29 smaller grade
bluefin 25 pounders for the most part. By late evening things went wide open
on the albacore and we got what we
needed for the trip. Nice size albacore, 18 to 25 pounds. We are heading down
to Alijos rocks we will be in that area late morning. The weather has been
nice 12 knots of wind and hopefully it stays that way. We will report again
tomorrow. Andy Cates
