Good morning folks
We got under way yesterday and so far things are doing great. The sardines
look good and the weather is nice . The hurricane that we were worried about
is slowly dying . Last report was 30 MPH winds and decreasing. Our first stop
will be at Alijos rocks for possibly squid and if we have room , mackerel or
small tuna for chunks. Our final destination being Hurricane bank. After a
month of maintenance we will still have some work to do to get ready for
fishing. Some of the highlight things we did for The Rooster are new
propellers which gave us just a little more speed. More than anything it cut
down the vibration to almost none. Those of you coming out this summer will
hardly believe the difference. The boat is so much smoother and even more
comfortable now with the new air conditioning unit in the galley. We really
got things set up good for not only the summer but next winter with a
different setup winch for lowering and raising both of our skiffs. A much
faster motor will get the skiffs in the water faster and safer for chasing
down big fish.
New carpet in the staterooms and galley, new upholstery I could go on and on,
you will just have to come out and enjoy it for yourself. We are going to get
our day started . We will talk to you later. Tom Jackson would like to wish
his wife a happy 11th anniversary. He will miss you.

June 2 2002
Good afternoon folks.
Our day started early with a 200 AM wake up call to try for squid. We did get
some but we will have to try again tonight for more. We made a pass by Alijos
rocks at daylight. We saw a couple of schools of 25 to 40 pound fish and sign
of yellowtail on the Southwest area . The weather was a bit choppy so we
decided to keep going down to the Alijos bank were we saw more sign of
yellowtail and tuna. It looks like an 8 day trip to the Rocks would be a good
bet. Water temp at 67 degrees and blue.
With good weather reports from the Hurricane center we decided to keep rolling
down in hopes of the Hurricane Bank. This is a one shot deal with the Islands
being closed. Hopefully our timing is good and we see some decent fishing. It
looks like the weather is going to cooperate, at least so far.

June 3 2002
Good morning folks.
Our attempt for squid last night did not work out. After an our of drifting we
picked up one squid and one Cuttlefish, not enough to stick around for. The
event of the evening was the Basketball game that we pumped through the boat
off the SSB radio.
Today we will go over a few things about Wahoo fishing. Mostly safety but with
techniques shown in as well. We have a half dozen people that have not caught
or seen a Wahoo. They are anxious and have a lot of interesting questions on
that type of fishing. We will try for squid again tonight, get to the Bank at
about 3:00 am and hopefully have a good report for you tomorrow. By the way
the weather is nice now and no news of any new storms developing down below.
See you tomorrow

June 4 2002
Good evening folks, we had a nice day of wahoo fishing today here at Hurricane
Bank. We stayed busy throughout the entire day. The weather was very nice
today and with the action made for an enjoyable day. We ended up with day
limits wahoo and 4 tuna. The tuna showed good today. We saw fish from 60 to
150 pounds jumping around almost all day. We do have a problem. The amount of
sharks here right now is hard to believe. They were eating the smaller tuna in
the morning and ate the wahoo bombs throughout the day. It is going to be very
hard to put together a catch on tuna unless the sharks back off. There is no
shortage of fish, and decent ones at that. Hopefully the sharks move off and
we get a chance at some clean tuna fishing. At least a chance to properly fish
on the anchor.
June 5 2002
Good evening folks. The action on the Wahoo kept us busy throughout the
morning. We didn't see much sign of tuna until the afternoon. The most
encouraging thing was the fact that the sharks were not a real problem today.
We were able to fish on the anchor the entire day. We ended up with 40 wahoo
and a dozen tuna. most of the fish were 80 to 100 pounds with the exemption of
a 215 pounder caught by Earl Sandefur. Ralph Cox and Aaron Jackson also shown
here with a couple of decent size fish. There was good sign again today, the
fish just won't settle in and bite. Hopefully we can scratch a little better
on the tuna tomorrow, there is definitely the potential to put together a nice
trip.

June 7 2002
Good morning folks, Yesterday fell apart completely. There was absolutely no sign of tuna or wahoo the entire day. What a let down that was. It was almost unbelievable, from what we saw and caught the day before to nothing. The sharks were even in force to top it off. For the day we ended up with 4 wahoo. Very poor, probably the worst I have seen out here. So far this morning we have 15 wahoo . Still no sign of tuna but, maybe later. One good thing is we still have very good weather . We will report again tomorrow.

June 7 2002
Good evening folks. With another shark filled day and no sign of tuna, we
decided to finish the last half of the trip in northern waters, starting at
Alijos Rocks. We didn't leave Hurricane without scraping of the last of the
Wahoo, 25 for the day. The sharks were just as aggressive and made it almost
impossible to keep a kite bait out. With the good reports from the Rocks and
also good weather, we just could not turn down the chance get up there to
finish up. Here a pictures of Tom Davis and John Clark with a couple of
decent size wahoo

June 8 2002
Good afternoon folks. Traveling up today with perfect weather. A little cooler
of course but very nice. We went over a few things today about fishing Alijos
Rocks. Spent the day changing our gear to suit a different type of fishing.
Everyone seems excited about the move, the last couple of days were pretty
brutal and the fact that there is an option to fish the rocks has brought a
new thrill to the whole trip. We feel fortunate for what we got at the Bank,
the good Wahoo fishing and a few shots at some decent size tuna. It was hard
to believe how fast things could change. We will report again tomorrow.

June 10 2002
Good morning folks. After a couple days of travel we were ready for fish. The
Rocks paid off well for us. Steady action all afternoon on 30 to 40 pound fish
with a few bigger mixed in. Only a few decent yellows mixed in. Shown here are
Aaron Jackson, Dan Kogut, Bud Mauerhan and John Clark with one of the better
size fish at the Rocks. The move from the Hurricane Bank to the rocks worked
out well, with limits of yellowfin and 15 yellowtail who could argue. The
group really enjoyed the day and worked very well together. So far this
morning nothing. Only 1 yellowtail last night on the Alijos bank. We will
report again tomorrow.

June 11 2002
Good morning folks. We never did much on the 42 fathom spot. A few nice
yellowtail shown here . Alec Jackson, Mike Faulkner ,and Larry Martin shown
here with the better grade yellows on the "iron". We looked around outside the
bank and below for nothing. We decided to go back to the rocks for the
afternoon. The afternoon brought steady action on 30 to 50 pound yellow fin.
Al Nubling shown here after a tough battle on 30 pound test. The fish were
still biting when we decided to leave at about 530. We are on our way to the
13 fathom spot "uncle sam" area. Today we are going to focus on yellowtail.
Hopefully we find good action on decent size yellows in here . The weather is
still very nice, even now the sun is out and beginning to warm things up.
We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

June 12 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday didn't work out to well. Only a dozen yellows to
be had on the 13 fathom spot. Then all the way down to the 23 fathom spot for
only a couple of yellows. Conditions were very poor, 63 degree water was the
warmest and the color wasn't right. Unfortunately we had to plow all the way
back up and the weather got rough, needless to say yesterday didn't go to
well. So far this morning we have 50 yellowtail at Cedros Island. The grade,
12 to 20 pounds. Hopefully we will continue to pick on the anchor. The weather
is much nicer, but still windy. Tonight we will try for bait and then fish
Chester's Rock in the morning for trophy yellows. We will report again
tomorrow
June 13 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was a decent day. The only drawback was the
wind. Windy almost all day and the current going up in the wind made it a bit
uncomfortable. The afternoon brought great action on yellowtail. Spots under
birds were everyone would hook up at the same time was exciting. The spots
themselves were really a sight. The yellows were all up on the surface
actually rolling on top of each other in a huge ball. They didn't stick around
for to long but it gave each guy a chance to get a couple on each stop.
This morning we will start at Chester's Rock. Hopefully we get a few trophy
yellows. We will report again tomorrow.
Andy Cates
June 14 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday we finished up on more yellowtail action.
Starting the morning at Chester's rock. We did get some Yellows there , but
not the grade we are used to catching. Much smaller fish 18 to 25 pounds. The
weather was nice which made for a comfortable morning and we did get chances
on some of the bigger fish. After breakfast we went back to the South end of
Cedros for a few drifts on more yellowtail. As the weather kicked up we went
in for lunch in the lee of the island to enjoy some sunshine. We went out for
one last go around on the yellows in the afternoon. After some action we went
back inside to the island and spent the evening breaking down our gear and
enjoyed a nice dinner on the anchor in front of the salt factory. I sent in
pictures of yellows we got at Chester's. Tom Reynolds, Bob Cherry and Dan
Kogut were showcased here. Today we are traveling home we will be home
tomorrow. We will be home at 800 am. SEE YOU AT THE DOCK Andy Cates

June 20th
Good morning to all. Today is the second day of a 5 day trip. We started out
yesterday at the 200 mile area for albacore, and there was not very much sign
for those of us out there. The weather has been a little bit choppy and cold.
We did manage to get 25 albacore and a few yellowtail for our efforts. Today
we are at Benitos Island trying for yellowtail, and having some decent action
on 15 to 25 lb. fish. Most of these fish taken on the yoyo jigs. We hope we
can scratch at the yellows today, they are good grade fish. We have just
installed a new satellite TV. system, and are already enjoying the baseball
games, movies, and news programs like CNN. The new larger screen TV. is really
great for viewing anywhere in the galley. We will update this report later
tonight with all the latest info. Talk to you all then. Jeff DeBuys
June 20th
Good afternoon everyone, we spent the day at Benitos Island and scratched at
the yellowtail. The fishing was not red hot, but there was enough action that
everyone got a handful of fish. The grade is excellent, with most fish going
15 to 25 lbs. pictured here are some lucky guys with 30 to 40 lb fish. They
are Carlos Higareda and Ko Tamura, Loren Hemer, and Tim Cann with some
trophy yellows. We ended up with just over 100 fish for our efforts. 90 % of
the fish were taken on yoyo jigs. we are going to try to catch mackerel
tonight for tomorrow. We are going to try it again here again tomorrow. The
weather is good also. we will have another report tomorrow. take care. Jeff

June 21st
Good evening everyone, we have a fishing report for today. We tried for bait
last night, but it was hard to find, and we only got a little bit of mackerel.
Today at Benitos island we scratched at the quality yellowtail, slower in the
a.m., and showing better in the afternoon. The seal lion problem is absolutely
out of control. We did manage to catch 95 yellows, from 15 to 30 lbs. The
weather is still cold and windy. For our last day of fishing, we plan to try
for albacore our last day. We will have another report at the end of our trip.
see ya then. Jeff DeBuys
June 22nd
good afternoon to all. Today was the last day of our 5 day trip. Things on the
offshore scene are really tough. We covered miles upon miles of water for only
a couple of handful of albacore. Really brutal for all the boats out here. We
had choppy weather all day as well. We will be back to San Diego Sunday around
8 am. All in all we had a fun time and had some decent fishing at Benitos. sea
ya later. Jeff DeBuys
June 23-29 Six day trip
June 24 2002
Good morning folks. This morning we are in route for B3nitos Island. We are
trolling and looking for albacore. But it sounds like from reports that we
want to be further south. Our plan is to fish the Island today and then go
west to an area that has produced good fishing the last couple of days. We
will spend the morning getting rigged. Quite a few first timers this trip.
Hopefully we can get them broken in on some yellowtail action this afternoon.
The weather is much better. Very nice here right now. The weather reports from
various places sounds much better. Not much else to report right now, we will
see you tomorrow, Andy Cates
June 25 2002
Just a quick note today, as Andy and the crew have been busy with limits of
albacore and also 60-70 Bluefin tuna in the 18-35 pound range. They are
fishing @ 370 miles from San Diego. Sorry that this is not a detailed
report but Andy barely had enough time to call this report today. Just
to busy catching fish.
June 26 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday worked out very well for us and most of the
other boats that decided to make the long haul. Albacore were eager and
Bluefin tuna were still to be had. The Bluefin we got on were a little smaller
than the days prior , but still a welcome sight. The grade of albacore is
fantastic 20 to 30 pounds with some bigger mixed in. We almost got all the
Albacore for the trip so it will give us chance to focus on the Bluefin here
today. After a taste of some 85 Bluefin the anglers are eager for more. Maybe
we can get back on those big ones. We will report again tomorrow
June 27 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was considerably slower than the day before.
We did manage some better size Bluefin today. Pictures shown here of the guys
with some Jack Pot contenders. Zero albacore and 26 Bluefin for the day.
A lot slower than yesterday but still not to bad. This morning we are at
Cedros Island and we have 32 yellowtail. Things seem to have died here but
maybe this afternoon. See you tomorrow, Andy Cates

June 28 2002
Good morning folks. We ended up at Bonitos yesterday and it was not very
good. Same deal as in the beginning of the trip. Lots of sea lions. It looked
like there was plenty of yellow tail around it was just impossible tot get
through the seals. We ended up with 42 yellows for the day. We had dinner on
the anchor before heading up in the nasty weather, which turned out to be not
all that bad. This morning we are looking around for albacore. So far we have
nothing. We are 200 miles from home so we can only give it half the day. We
will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates
June 30,
Good evening everyone, we departed San Diego yesterday for a 6 day
extravaganza. After stopping off to fill the boat with choice sardines and
anchovies, we had our onboard tackle seminar to go over the different ways we
will rig our gear for the trip. The weather has been absolutely
beautiful since we left, and continues to be excellent. We started fishing
today at about 250 miles from the point. We scratched away at the albacore
today and we might have 250 or better for our efforts. Most of the fish is 14
to 16 lbs, with
some better ones up to 25 lbs. mixed in. We had some good fishing right at
dark. We are going to fish further south tomorrow, with the hopes of running
across some Bluefin tuna and albacore. Wish us lots of luck. Until then , take
care. Jeff DeBuys
