July 2007

July 5th, 2007

Good morning folks. Yesterday paid off with some of the best yellowtail fishing I have seen in a while. Surface action was steady on the Iron as well as bait. The grade was outstanding with fish up to 40 pounds taken throughout the morning. Average was 20 pounds with some smaller and bigger.

After lunch we slowed things down and headed offshore going back towards Alijos. Finding only small tuna and dorado on various kelps and jig strikes. One blind jig strike that resulted in a nice wahoo to finish off the day. We will be at the Rocks today and hoping for a change and a chance for a few J.P fish.

After this start heading up the line. Great weather again today

Good evening folks. The Rocks did not go all that well for us. On the bright side we did pick up 4 wahoo in the morning and lost at least that many. From there our luck changed. Our positioning put us on lots of small yellowtail and tuna. Very hard for us to pick off any of the better size tuna. Finally in the evening after a few re-adjustment we hooked a few better tuna and landed 4.

Something but not good enough for our group to stay. We are headed in to the ridge in hopes of variety like they had on the last trip. If things go well we can head back out and try for some Jackpot fish at the rocks. We have great weather and high hopes for tomorrow

Good morning folks. We had a slow pick yesterday at the Rocks. Similar to what it has been. After the explosive action on yellows the day before. Everyone seemed to be casual with just a chance and the experience of tuna fishing. Fish up to 70 pounds were caught but mostly 35 to 50 pounders on fly line and kite. the sharks took a few in the evening but most of the day not a problem.

Things perked up again in the evening so we stayed until dark with 28 tuna and 10 yellows for the day. Happy to have a chance at Jack Pot fish we decided to head up, traveling today and fishing albacore tomorrow on our last day.

Nice weather again here and looking forward to even more nice weather above.

Good morning folks. Yesterday started off well with fish right out of the gate in the grey of the morning. We strung together a few more stops and were looking forward to the afternoon when everything just went down. With fast action in the morning the rest of the day seemed "dry" with just an occasional strike after lunch. 45 albacore in the morning seemed like a good start but unfortunately it turn into the final outcome.

It could have been worse but it could have been better. Very little sign of albacore today. We caught 3 bluefin in the morning and have covered a lot of area. We just found a kelp with good grade yellows on it and that basically has been the start of our day. Yellows from 12 to 28 pounds with the first kelp in this area for 31 fish. I hope there are more around with the lack sign of tuna these yellows would save the day.

Good evening folks. Yesterday we fished offshore and came up with only 2 yellowfin and small they were. The kelps salvaged our day with good size yellows from 15 to 25 pounds. It kept us busy in between trying for tuna and heading down.

A couple of decent size dorado to add to the day. Cedros paid off with good yellowtail fishing 1 halibut and 1 white seabass to add for the great day of fishing. We are going to spend another day down here with the good weather and good fishing.

We will report again tomorrow.

Good morning folks. Another great day of yellowtail fishing yesterday. Good action on 15 to 18 pound fish with fish up to 35 pounds mixed in. In the morning and evening the bigger yellows show and we had a spectacular show on the trophies last night.

The brute yellowtail gave us a struggle landing 13 after watching them chase sardines all around the boat. Have your surface Iron ready for that. A couple of White seabass to go along with the yellows for a little variety.

Today we are trolling our way up the line looking for some good water to start in. Hopefully get a few strikes on albacore. We will report again tomorrow.

1ST PLACE                  40.8 LB BLUEFIN TUNA caught by AL JACKSON OF BUENA PARK, CA

3RD PLACE                   32.11 LB YELLOWTAIL caught by; PAUL HATCHER OF RANCHO CARDOVA, CA

Special Thanks to Richard Hightower and our sponsors Newell and Yo-Zuri for all the great gifts and tackle they brought to the boat.

A couple of added things for the yellowtail fishing . With the excitement of top water fishing and the confusion on what to use. In the past the Seeker Ulua has always been a favorite for the experienced surface Iron angler. Though very functional it can also be intimidating and hard to use with an open party group.

The Calstar 90J has proven to be an excellent option for surface Iron fishing. Easy to use and not over powering it gives the casting distance and excellent pulling power on the bigger size yellows. If the "long rod " has been an interest to you but still unsure what to use at this application , for the intermediate or beginning surface jig fisherman I think this is an excellent ,user friendly rod to get started with. See your local shop and check it out before your next trip

Good evening folks. A showing of tuna today but they were not interested in our baits, it is nice to see fish moving up the coast and hopefully soon they will get off the bait balls and bite the sardine. With the lack of tuna action we filled the afternoon with action on dorado and a few yellow on kelps. Really the first honest sign of Dorado and they were welcome sight. For the most part they were all nice fish and some great photo shots with the bright colors.

Tomorrow we will be fishing yellows and then moving up the line the next day for more offshore fishing.

July 26th, 2007

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had excellent yellowtail fishing at the Island. Action throughout the whole day on 25 to 35 pound fish. Long drifts in flat calm, hot weather. Picture perfect, just like in the magazine photos. Offshore again here today looking for a line of kelps with some action on dorado and hopefully tuna. We will report again tomorrow

July 29th, 2007

Good morning folks. Our first day of a 4-day was very nice with the offshore scene awakening with nice grade yellows and dorado on kelps. We had a line of kelps yesterday that will be hard to top today although our focus today will be on Dorado and tuna after the nonstop yellowtail fishing yesterday.

Nice grade of fish as well  Each kelp varies but for the most part its 15 to 30 pound fish. Some kelps you don't see fish under 20 pounds other you do. Good weather here again today.

We will report again tomorrow

July 30TH, 2007

Good afternoon folks. The last 2 days were filled with action on kelps with yellowtail and Dorado. Not quite like the first day but still plenty good. Targeting the dorado and releasing some of the yellows throughout the day. Tuna are around ,small and they do not bite. We are thankful for the offshore action that is available.

Tomorrow we leave on another 4 day and the look of things another kelp paddy bonanza. Hopefully this great weather holds so it is comfortable.
