July 2003

July 1 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday we spent trying for Blue fin tuna . The big ones had popped up the day before and we were in position to be there in the morning. For our efforts we got a school of 50 to 70 pound bluefin and scratched up 33 and one 70 pound yellowfin in the bunch. We didn't get on that school until well after lunch time and by 5:00 it had dwindled down to nothing. We spent the rest of the evening looking but never found another school. I posted some pictures of some of the guys. Today we are at Alijos Rocks. There are 3 other boats here today so hopefully the fish spread out and we all get some. The weather is flat calm . We are hoping for a little breeze to get the kites up. We will report again tomorrow

July 2 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday was much slower at the rocks than we had hoped for. After a morning of a lot of show but no bites we decided to go and look at Alijos Bank. That sure didn't work out ,we did not see any sign of fish and worked our way back up to the rocks for the afternoon. The afternoon brought the same good sign of fish but still the problem of them not wanting to bite. Anyway, we ended up scratching 15 tuna and 5 yellowtail in the afternoon. They were all decent size fish , which keeps the interest high. I posted some pictures of some Alijos yellowfin. Today we are back up looking for bluefin tuna . Hopefully we have a good report for you guys by the end of the day. Andy Cates

July 3 2003
Good morning folks. We have a great report from yesterday, After breakfast we got on a school of bigger size Bluefin, 85 to 150 pounders. We pulled out 19 really nice fish after 3 hours of drifting. Most of the fish were caught on the sardine and a few on the mackerel and the kite. The live giant squid surprisingly did not work all that hot on this school although we did get a couple of our biggest fish using them on the kite. Later in the day more fish came up and the fishing on 50 to 70 pound fish was very good. We did get on the bigger fish one more time and picked up another 6 but they did not want to bite that good. The fish put on quite a show and in the initial blast everyone would have one on as the stern would explode with bluefin.

We ended our day with a nice load of Bluefin with quite a few of them over a hundred pounds. Everyone had several chances at these trophy grade Bluefin today. It was one of the better days I have seen in recent years on these bigger units. We went to the rocks last night and tanked up on mackerel and are out on the Bluefin grounds again today. Check out these pictures of some of these big bluefin. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 4 2003
Good morning folks.
Yesterday was a long day behind the wheel. Lots of driving and really never stopping the boat until the evening. The fish never came up to the surface today which made your chances very low. We did finally get a school in the evening. We picked up 7 nice size bluefin before sundown. 90 to 120 pounds with one outstanding fish of around 160 pounds. The weather is still very nice and we are headed in to the 13 fathom spot on the upper end of the ridge. We will fish until after lunch and then call it a day. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 5 2003
Good morning folks. We spent half a day at the 13 fathom spot yesterday. Although we saw excellent sign of 15 to 25 pound yellow tail we were unable to get them to bite. We scratched 30 yellows and a hand full of grouper for our efforts. With the amount of fish around you would have thought we had done much better. It was a bit of a disappointment but maybe next time. With the amount of big fish we have on the boat we just couldn't complain. We spent the morning at the North end of Cedros and broke down our gear. We are on our way home now and have fantastic weather. Fishing in the albacore grounds sounds really good so the people that are on the next 3 day trip get ready. Hopefully the weather holds up and the fishing sustains. We will be in tomorrow at 830 in the morning. We will see you then, Andy Cates

July 6 2003
Good morning folks.
Yesterday proved to be an impressive day at the way in scale. The 8 day trip produced Jack pot fish of 170.01 pounds, 160 and 129.9 for top three places as well as an additional 23 fish over a hundred pounds for a total of 25 over a hundred. The trip we just left on is a three day so we are a little out of range for that fishing. Although last night there were reports of more big Bluefin being seen again. This morning we are going to target albacore and then search for Bluefin. The weather is still nice and hopefully the great albacore fishing will sustain. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

July 8 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday we spent fishing albacore and it was very good fishing all afternoon. By evening we had all that we wanted and there were biting in first class long range style. The grade of the fish is fantastic. Most fish are at least 20 pounds with some bigger ones mixed in. We had some newcomers on the trip and they were ecstatic with the amount of action and size of the fish. Today we are at San Martin in hopes of some yellowtail. We have good conditions and see sign they just don't want to bite. It is still early, hopefully they settle in and start to go. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

July 10 2003
Good morning folks. We are heading down on a 4 day trip. We picked up a nice load of bait yesterday and enjoyed an afternoon of beautiful weather. We decided to go down to the 220 mile area rather than the 140 mile area in hopes of connecting on not just the albacore but Bluefin as well. We still have another 50 miles to get in the area but maybe we will bump into something on the way down. We will report again tomorrow

July 11 2003
Good morning folks
Yesterday turned out to be a real nice day. In the morning we started with yellowtail on kelps. To our surprise the kelps were holding good size yellows. The average was 15 to 18 pounds with a few in the 20 pound range. It is good to see the better size yellows it sure is a bonus when you stop on a kelp. The rest of the day we hit scattered albacore and put together a couple of nice stops. In the late afternoon we got on a spot of 25 to 35 pound Blue fin that was biting good. We drifted for about 3 hours. Every bait that hit the
water was a bite. The albacore took over on the drift and we got our limit of nice size albie to go with it. Some up to 35 pounds. We hit a few more spots of the same grade bluefin into the evening and finished the day with 70 Bluefin , limit of albacore and 25 yellowtail. I posted a couple of pictures of the group. Today we are going to look around for bigger Bluefin and more yellows on the kelps. We will start practicing catch and release on the albacore. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 13 2003
Good morning folks. We spent the morning at the south end of Guadalupe Island and later at the North end Pilot Rock. We saw signs of good size tuna at both places. We hooked one nice one in the morning and lost him and picked up 3 decent size yellowtail. The grade of tuna ranged from 50 to what looked as big as 90 pounds. Unfortunately they are not ready to bite. On the north end we saw the same size tuna and scratched a dozen decent size yellows and no bites on the nice size tuna. We did pick up a few smaller tuna on a spot of puddlers going into Pilot

The weather was very nice at the Island and the guys had a nice relaxing day after two days of offshore action. It was a nice way to finish up the trip. If only the tuna would have bit just a few baits. Maybe next time Today we are leaving on a 3 day trip. If things hold up like they have it should be good. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

July 14 2003
Good evening everyone, today's report is as follows. We rolled on down to the grounds, and arrived early enough to get in on some of the best albacore fishing I have ever seen in my life. The fish were very eager,
and we had an outstanding day overall. The grade of fish is a beautiful 20 to 30 lbs. We did manage to pull 8 bluefin tuna from the foaming schools of albacore, and they were 50 to 70 lbs.  the weather is nice, and the people really had a great time today. We are going to concentrate on trying to locate some bluefin tuna tomorrow, so wish us luck. sea ya then, Jeff and crew

July 14 2003
Hello everyone, here is a quick rundown. We departed San Diego yesterday on a 3 day extravaganza with a perfect load of bait and perfect weather. We have a good mix of fisherman aboard, some novice, and some with quite  a bit of experience. things sound pretty encouraging on the fishing grounds, and we have high hopes for our first day of fishing. Wish us luck, and we'll have a report tonight. Sea ya, Jeff DeBuys

July 15, 2003
Good evening folks, here is a rundown for today. We spent the day offshore looking for bluefin, and we never saw any to speak of. We had some decent looking kelps that had some 15 to 20 lb. yellowtail on them, and we scratched around 50 fish.  We released some albacore as well. I must say we had a fairly epic 3 day trip, and the guys had a ball. We will be back to San Diego in the morning at 0830. talk to you later, Jeff DeBuys.
p. s. Tad wants Allen to come on down, he has fish.

July 16, 2003
hello and good evening everyone, we departed on a 4 day trip this afternoon and other than a great group of anglers, nice weather, and a choice load of bait things are going well. We will be at the fishing grounds around 0800 tomorrow, and have high hopes for the trip. Wish us luck, we will report later.  Jeff Debuys

July 17,2003
Good evening folks, here is the rundown for today. We fished down around 210 miles for most of the day, and had an outstanding day on bluefin tuna and albacore. We saw a lot of fish today, and the pace was absolutely perfect, with 5 to 7 going for most of the time, and we had some lulls to regroup and retie hooks. the grade was almost the same, bluefin were 25 to 35 lbs. and a few bigger, as the albacore 25 to 35 lbs. Today was really fun fishing, as we had some novices who did really well. We plan on being around here tomorrow someplace, to try again for some more action. Today's final tally is as follows, day limits on the bluefin, and almost day limits on the albacore, with 1 big eye tuna for good measure. The weather is flat calm. sea ya later, Jeff and crew

July 18, 2003
Hello everyone, here is the latest report for July 18. We had a great early morning with wide open action on the 25 to 40 lb. bluefin tuna. After a while we left them and went looking for some bigger bluefin. We hit a few kelps along the way and had excellent action on 18 to 25 lb. yellowtail. We did manage to get a spot of bigger tuna late in the day, and it was all mixed up at first. We had yellowfin tuna 30 to 40 lbs., and then it turned to big bluefin. We managed 14 of the bigger fish, from 80 to 150 lbs. What a afternoon, as we also got a few bigeye tuna and a couple of handfuls of 35 to 40 lb. albacore. Things right now are as good as it ever gets out here. The Weather is excellent, and we hope it continues. Here are a couple of pictures , I wish we could put all the big ones up , but we only can send so many. We are going to try for albacore the last day, so wish us luck. Jeff Debuys

July 19,2003
Good afternoon everyone, we have just finished up on our last day of fishing. We had a pretty productive morning, with some good albacore fishing, along with good bluefin tuna fishing. We drifted by a kelp and
got some more quality yellowtail also. We are headed back to San Diego, and will be docked around 0930 tomorrow Sunday. As for this trip, all I can say is the fishing was epic, and the weather was just as good. We surely hope that it continues for everybody. We depart on a 5 day Newell sponsored trip tomorrow. sea ya then, Jeff DeBuys

July 21 2003
Good morning folks. We left yesterday on a five day trip. Newell sponsored with Yo-Zuri . We had a great raffle last night that included a handful of reels and some All Star rods. Also other items thrown in there. Everybody was a winner. So far this morning not much to report. The fleet is spread out in search of fish. We have a lot of boats out looking today so hopefully between us we can get on the fish. The weather has picked up a little. We have about 15 knots of wind. Still pretty nice weather, but a shock compared to how it has been. We will report again later and give you the progress of our hunt. Andy Cates

July 22 2003
Good morning folks. We spent the day fishing Bluefin and albacore. Things started off slow for us until we got on a school just before lunch. Things were fast and furious at first and then turned into a nice easy
pick. We had two other schools throughout the day that responded the same way. Start of fast and then go into a slow pick. There are some really nice albacore mixed in. Not a lot,18 for the day but with day limits of
Bluefin we were plenty busy all afternoon. The weather has picked up and we were on the Sea Anchor all night. The sea anchor makes all the difference in the world. We are going to fish in this same are a today hoping for the same success as yesterday. We will report again tomorrow.

July 23 2003
Good morning folks . Yesterday we spent the day fishing bluefin and albacore. In the morning we had some action on albacore but not much on the bluefin. After lunch we found a school and picked at the bluefin until evening. They never did want to bite but we scratched 70 bluefin and 30 albacore for the drift. After that we scratched at albacore until dark finishing off with a little over a hundred on them for the day.

So far this morning we are picking away at the albacore . Hopefully they will bite for us some time today. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

July 25 2003
Good morning folks. We spent our last morning chasing the big bluefin. We found several different spots, they just wouldn't bite. Really nice schools , fish up to 150 pounds would come flying out of the water after our chum and then settle in around the boat. They would stick for about 10 minutes going crazy on the sardines. Its really hard to believe we never hooked one. Although we did get 3 Big eye in the may lay so it wasn' t for nothing. Boy  what a show !. So we left for home at about 1000 and had beautiful weather all the way, Today we are leaving on a three day trip and things sound good for the shorter range trips. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

July 26 2003
Good morning folks. We are on a 3-day trip that left yesterday afternoon. We are traveling down to the 200 mile area to try for albacore and bluefin. Yesterday fishing sounded very good down here so we are hoping for it to sustain. The water is warm down her and makes things very tricky. The concentrated area of albacore are hard to predict . The fish seem to move around a little more or just not come up until certain times of the day. It sounds like the smaller grade bluefin is still around and we are hoping to get in on that as well. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

July 27 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday was a very good day of albacore and bluefin fishing. The size of the albacore was the best we have seen all year. Most of the fish were 25 to 40 pounds with possibly a few bigger mixed in. The bluefin were the smaller size 25 to 40 pounds. The albacore were fast and furious were as the bluefin came slower drifting keeping 2to 4 going with better flurries at times. In the evening the bluefin were biting
good into the dark. Most of the guys had enough fishing for the day by then, but those that were out there were having a great time. This morning we are starting up above where we were yesterday. There has been bluefin seen in this area from boats coming and going from the areas below. This will give us more time to fish and prospect some new water. We will be focusing on bluefin and yellowtail on the kelps and releasing the albacore. We will report again tomorrow Andy Cates

July 28 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday was spent stopping on kelps for yellowtail and small spots of bluefin. The bluefin did not want to bite. After 3 different schools we only caught a couple of 35 pounders. Most of our efforts went to the kelp paddies. We hit a lot of kelps throughout the day keeping only the yellows that were 14 pounds or better, and there were definitely some better ones mixed in. Some of the kelps had fish 20 to 30 pounds. Not many though most of the fish averaged 14 to 18 pounds. We scratched all day and had a lot of released albacore to claim. We ended up with just about limits of yellowtail for the day and just a couple bluefin .
We managed to stay busy all day with plenty of action the kelps had to offer. After the smoke had cleared we ended up with a nice scratch on the yellows. We are leaving today on a 4 day trip. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 29 2003
Good morning folks. So far this morning things are pretty tough. It sounds like the fish are down. I know there not up were we are. Reports from the other boats below us sound grim as well. Hopefully some time today things come up. The weather has come down so that is making visibility much better there is just nothing to look at yet. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

July 30 2003
Good morning folks. We spent some time in the morning looking for albacore on the way down. It really didn't work out. We saw no sign up were we finished off our last trip so we continued to head down. We arrived at the 200 mile area after lunch and got on a school of 25 to 40 pound bluefin . They bit good at first and then backed off. We got 55 fish out of that one . Later in the evening we found a school of 70 to
90 pound fish and that lasted in to the dark. We finished with 15 of those nicer fish. They really put on a show boiling around the boat and bit a little for a change. We put up a group photo of the guys fortunate enough to catch one. We are in the same area again today hoping for a few schools. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 31 2003
Good morning folks, Well Yesterday we started in the area where we caught the better size bluefin tuna. We spent until lunch time in that area. We saw three different schools that would not bite. A report came in of albacore and bluefin 50 miles above us. Discouraged with what we had caught we decided to make the run.
We arrived at 400 in the afternoon And had action until dark. It ended up being a good move. We picked up 10 25 to 40 pound bluefin in the mix.

Today we are going to pound it out up here. We have our trophy fish aboard we would like some more albacore and bluefin. We are starting to get albacore as we speak. We will report again tomorrow
