July 2002

June 29 - July 5

July 1
Good afternoon everyone, here is the rundown for today. We traveled south last night in hopes of finding some Bluefin tuna today. There were 2 other boats with us today, and no Bluefin were seen. We worked to
another area in the afternoon, and got into a hot albacore zone. We got on a good school of fish and drifted for a couple of hours. It was full speed fishing, with the fish biting everything in the water. We easily filled out our limits. The grade of fish was the best part about it. They were a 16 to 35 lb. average. The weather still flat calm, and we hope it stays that way. We are headed to Cedros island to try for some
yellowtail for tomorrow. We will have another report then. see you all later. Jeff DeBuys

July 2
Good evening everyone, today's report is as follows. We started at the south end of Cedros Island in the morning. There was a good spot of yellows up and around, and they bit pretty good for a couple of hours. At
9:30 they quit and sunk out, never to be seen again. We did manage to get one "layer" of yellows for our efforts in the morning. We ran to Chester's Rock, for nothing. In the afternoon we ended up at Benitos Island, with a good sign of yellowtail around. We scratched forty yellowtail here with most being BETTER GRADE 25-35 lbs. Included are a few pictures of the BETTER GRADE yellows that were caught at Benitos Island. Weather is still picture perfect. Tomorrow we plan on fishing Cedros Island again in hopes of a "BIG HIT" on the yellows. Until then, take care and keep a tight line - Jeff DeBuys

July 3
Good Evening everyone. Today we fished the south end of Cedros for that better grade yellowtail.  Things looked pretty grim for the morning, but then we finally got on them.  We had a steady pick for the morning on the 15-20 pound yellows.  Most of the fish were taken on the yo-yo iron, as well as the mackerel and sardines.  Things got slow just after lunch, so we headed to Benitos Island for more yellowtail.  We scratched at Benitos for the rest of the afternoon giving us limits for the day on yellows for the day. There is a good sign here at Benitos but the Sea-Lions are terrible. One more thing is that Sonny Jones got a dandy yellow (not pictured) weighing in at approximately 49 lbs.  So far we have had an epic trip, with fishing being very good and tomorrow we will finish our trip along  the coast.  The weather is still favorable and we hope that it stays this way.   I think the guys on the up and coming trip might have the possibility to get some BLUE FIN TUNA just a gut feeling though... until tomorrow  take care.

July 4
Good afternoon, and happy 4th of July to everyone. We finished up our trip today with not too much to report. We fished along the coast at Canoas, and conditions were on the cold side. We took off for San Diego at 0930, and have had a beautiful ride up so far. We had a really great trip , with some awesome action on albacore, and yellowtail. I again think the Bluefin tuna are not too far off, with water conditions improving every day. The final tally for the trip is as follows, limits of albacore and just about limits on yellowtail. We should arrive in san Diego at 0730 July 5th. We will talk to you all later. Jeff DeBuys

July 5 - July 13

July 7 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was our first day of the Coach's Beefer 3 2002 charter. With a lot of familiar faces from last year we welcome everyone back for this years trip. We started of with a bang on the albacore. One stop for 2 hours produced wide open albacore and limits for everyone. We spent the rest of the day looking around for Bluefin but came up with nothing. At 6:00 we decided to make the move to Alijos Rocks. We will be there today at lunch time. We will be going through some good country this morning and already things are starting to look fishy around here. Maybe we will bump into something even before the Rocks. The Albacore are moving up , but still over 200 miles away. But the way this water seems to be moving things should get closer to home before you know it.
We will report again tomorrow.

July 8 2002
Good morning folks. We arrived at 100 yesterday at Alijos rocks. We had a slow afternoon from 2 to 5 PM as we picked up 15 yellow fin and a handful of yellows. Bait fishing went well for us last night, the squid has been the key here and it is showing already this morning. Jody Hale picked up this nice yellowfin yesterday, this is about the average grade for the rocks right now. So far this morning we have 30 tuna and 10 yellows . The squid is already making a difference. The kite action is very good. We'll report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

July 9 2002
Good morning folks. We ended up with a steady pick bite on the fish the rest of the day. Ending up with 81 tuna and 24 yellowtail. After the first 30 tuna the rest were all on the kite. We ended up making about 5 complete rotations on the kite Most of these guys have not even seen the kite much less that much action on it. Bait went well last night and we have enough squid today to fly line them. Already that seems to be working out. So far this morning we have 50 tuna and 10 yellowtail. We owe most of the bites to the squid although we still are getting a few sardine fish. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 10 2002
Good morning folks. We ended up with a nice day yesterday. 120 yellowfin and 20 yellowtail. The squid really seemed to pay off. We didn't have the wind for the kite, but flylining the squid made up for it. Most of the fish today were better grade. More 40 and 50 pounders mixed in with a few 60 and 70 pounders and a standout fish caught by Bernie Thomas also Coach Clark and Jerry Smith shown here with some of the better grade. So far this morning only a few fish, hopefully later. We plan on moving up the line today hoping that some Bluefin will come up in the next couple of days. The weather is nice and it will be easy to work in. See you tomorrow,  Andy Cates

July 11 2002
Good morning folks. We left the Rocks at about 100 yesterday and started making our way up. The morning bite at the rocks ended up good. With a better percentage of the fish on the squid. We did get a couple of trophy size yellowtail shown here with Larry Martin and Bill Hale. After 120 tuna and 20 yellowtail we decided to head up the line. There was a report from the Bonitos are of good size yellowtail so we will do that for a day and then head offshore for the next morning. See you tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 12 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was a bit slower than we anticipated. Benitos produced yellowtail into the dark which ended things on a good note. After the kelp on the Ranger Bank we did not see much more . So we decided to venture down to Benitos. Ending the day with a 103 yellows topped us off for the trip. Today we will be at San Martin for the morning, have lunch, break down and go home. I would say the trip was very successful, with even more sign of albacore it looks like the next trip will have some good action.
We will report tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 12 2002
Go afternoon folks. We are now on our way home after a morning of halibut fishing. We caught 21 halibut all average fish was 20 pounds some bigger ones shown here that went up to 30 pounds. Mike Shelton, Jody and Bill Hale, Mike Pattutlo and Coach Clark with some of the better size fish. We will be in tomorrow at 8:00 in the morning. See you then, Andy Cates

July 13- July 17

July 14 2002
Good morning folks. Well, it looks like a long haul to the fishing grounds. It sounds like the best fishing is over 200 miles away. We will be in the area late morning. Not much to report yet. We have a nice load of bait, mostly sardine as a matter of fact there was not any anchovies at the receivers. We will report later on our progress. Hopefully soon coming, Andy Cates

July 15 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday we had very good albacore fishing. We got in the area at 11:00 and were limited out on albacore at 5:00. We spent the rest of the day looking for Bluefin. We did see some mixed in with the albacore we just could not hook them. We decided to go to Bonitos and try for yellowtail. So far it seems to be working out well. We have a hundred yellows and still getting a few. On the way down we stopped on a kelp and Christopher Taylor picked up this nice yellow. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 16 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday ended up very nice at Benitos. Excellent weather, and excellent fishing. The best fishing we found was actually off the Island a couple of miles on various spots around the Island. The conditions and amount of yellowtail was the best I have ever seen at Benitos. The fish are spawning so they don't bite nearly as well as you would think. The excitement of pulling up on crashing yellowtail and everyone  getting bit right away is really a sight. After catching all the 15 to 25 pound yellowtail we wanted, we decide to get the anchor down and try for trophy size yellows. We never got another bite, they were splashing around the boat but just weren't interested. Today we are looking for kelps hoping to find a few stray Bluefin for the Jack Pot. Hopefully it works out. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

July 17 20002
Good morning folks, We spent yesterday outside of San Martin looking for kelp patties. We did se quite a few and that kept us busy for most of the day. Almost every kelp no matter what the size had at least a few yellowtail on them. We did see a couple of spots of Bluefin in the area but we could not get near them. The kelps do have some nice size yellows but you do have to release quite a few small ones. I put up some pictures of some of the bigger kelp paddy yellows. Ed Klimek , Bob  Yoshimoto and Damon Owens shown here. Today we leave on a 4day trip. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 17 - 21

July 18 2002
Good evening everyone, here is the report for July 18th.  We are currently on a 4 day trip.  We left San Diego yesterday, after we topped off our supply of cured sardines. We did the usual tackle seminar and spent the afternoon getting everyone rigged up. We traveled all night to the fishing grounds, and arrived here around 0830. It didn't take long to get in the groove of things, as we had a great stop on albacore right away.  We got going again and the next stop was even better we drifted for hours. It was as good as it gets for albacore, 18 to 35 lbs. We also caught 20 Bluefin tuna from 15 to 50 lbs., most were 20 to 40 lbs. there is pretty good life down here, as we hit a couple of kelps for 70 yellowtail 17 to 25 lbs, and 1 lonesome yellowfin tuna 50 lbs,. Tomorrow we are going to try for yellowtail at Benitos island. The weather is still good. We will have another report tomorrow.  Until then , keep a tight line. Jeff DeBuys

PS.  sorry we didn't have time to take any good photos.

July 19 2002
good evening folks, here is the report for Friday July 19th. Today we fished Benitos island, trying for yellowtail. The past few days down here were good for yellows. Today was different, in a few ways, first there was tons of bonito mixed in with the yellows, and it made it difficult to get to the yellowtail. We hit numerous spots of fish throughout the day with the yoyo jigs working best. The grade of fish around here is 16 to 25 lbs. We tried a few spots on the anchor, and one spot produced some trophy fish up to 50 lbs. We did manage to scrape a limit of yellows today for our efforts. We were hoping for more fish, but are happy with our day. Tomorrow we will fish off shore for half a day in hopes for more Bluefin tuna or kelps. We will report at the end of the day. sea ya then. Jeff DeBuys

July 20 2002
hello everyone, we have a report for July 20th. Today we spent the first part looking for Bluefin tuna with no luck. Things down here in the hot zone cooled off today. We hit some kelps for more yellowtail, and scratched 35 or so fish before we had to boot it for home. We had a great 4 day trip along with a fun group of guys. I hope things turn around quick, I am sure they will, this was just a down day. the weather is still very good. We will be back to San Diego on the 21st early a.m. Talk
to everyone later. Jeff DeBuys

July 21-25

July 22 2002
Good morning folks. We decided to stop short last night and fish the 100 mile area. So far we are not impressed . The fish we are getting are much smaller than we are used to. With only 75 fish for the morning we have a lot of work to do.  Hopefully things go better for us this afternoon. We will report again tomorrow.  Andy Cates

July 23 2002
Good morning folks. We continued to pick at the albacore until dark. We never did get an evening bite, short stops on the jigs was the standard with just a couple of bait fish each time. We ended up with limits of albacore for the day but we had to work hard to get them. It could have been worse. Unfortunately the size of the fish are smaller than we have been catching 10 to 16 pounds is the average. We made a move last night south hoping for better size fish that we got a report on.  So far this morning we only have 22 albacore and they are still small. We are working our way out to the west, hopefully we can get on some new fish out here. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 24 2002
Good morning folks. We spent the morning at Guadalupe island. We are not real happy with what we have caught here. There was decent sign of yellows they just did not bite . Conditions made it tough to fish. Another boat at the south end reported similar problems and no tuna. The water is nice but still a little cool for this place. We are now going east looking for some kind of savior offshore. We need a lot of luck right now. Yesterday was a bummer with only 48 albacore. The only hope was the fact that there were some better size fish mixed in. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 25 2002
Good morning folks, We spent the last half of the day offshore, east of Guadalupe. We had some action in the afternoon which resulted in 81 albacore and 21 yellowtail. So far this morning we have 80 albacore and a handful of yellowtail. Hopefully we get a hit here this afternoon and finish off with a bang. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 27 2002
Good morning folks, We started our trip out hoping for some action on yellowtail. The kelp paddy's are producing action and decent size fish. Not much sign of albacore or bluefin in this area but we will finish our day here and focus on the yellows. One of the other boats to the west got on some albacore this morning, so things look god for us tomorrow. We plan on focusing on albies and BFT tomorrow. The weather is nice and all is well
Andy Cates

July 28 2002
Good afternoon. We have been busy this morning. The albacore fishing is back to excellent again. The grade is nice most fish are at least 16 pounds with up to 35, so things are starting to shape up again after that awful full moon. There is sign of better size Bluefin as well. We have only caught a couple through the albacore, but this afternoon we are going to focus on BFT. Most of the bluefin we see are mixed with the albacore and are up to 90 pounds. It looks like a guy has a chance for a trophy here this afternoon. We will be at the dock tomorrow at 800 and then leaving again on another 3 day trip, See you then
Andy Cates

July 30 2002
Good morning folks, So far this morning we have been busy on kelps and short stops on albacore. There is a little sign of Bluefin We have a couple on various kelps one up to 65 pounds. We are going to focus the day on kelps and hopefully continue the action on the yellows and scattered albacore. Things aren't' t exactly hot and heavy but we are staying busy paddy hopping. Maybe we will get lucky and get a drift on some Bluefin. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

July 31 2002
Good morning folks. We finished off last night with a kelp paddy that delivered great action on yellows , we also picked off a few decent size Bluefin up to 65 pounds. We ended up with 14 Bluefin, all of which are decent size. The albacore pick was ok drifting along pulling on a couple of the bigger Bluefin. We finally landed our last fish at about 9 pm. That last kelp was really a good one. So far today it has been just a pick on the albie. Early this morning we had a good drift were we got 40 pretty quick and then just a few at a time after that. We are working up trying to buy more time for an afternoon bite. Hopefully we can finish off with a hit on albacore. We will see you tomorrow. We will be in at 8 am . Andy Cates
