January 2004

Jan. 1st 2004
Good evening folks. We started on the 13 fathom spot this morning. We were hoping for action on yellows and smaller grade tuna. We got very little of both. Jeff Bruner landed the first fish of 2004 on the Red Rooster , A decent yellowtail on the Iron. We fished various spots and had a little action on yellows and a couple of keeper size tuna. We decided to work offshore the rest of the day. Things seemed to be scattered out today. We found a couple of different areas that had fish but would not bite. We had one stop were they came up pretty good they just didn't stick around. Trevor Stanland had this decent fish on the iron.

Tomorrow we are going to fish the North end of Cedros in hopes of some yellowtail action We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Good evening folks. We finished off with a bang this morning. Great yellowtail fishing until 930 in the morning. Nice weather and good iron fishing on 14 to 18 pound yellowtail. It was a nice way to finish off the trip. I posted some pictures of the guys with various yellows. We enjoyed a nice ride all day and will be home in the morning at 930. We stretched it a little longer due to the good fishing. We are leaving day after tomorrow on a 15 day trip. We will report again then, Andy Cates

Good evening folks. We are at Cedros Island right now. We made a pass by to see if there was any bait. We didn't find it so we are heading for Hipillito tomorrow to try for mackerel. Today is our first day of a 15 day and our intentions are to fish the lower banks. We have a fair load of sardine and are expecting some die off. Things sound slow on the inside but good on the outside. We are going to try our luck inside and if we have to then go outside. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Jan. 6, 2004
Good evening folks, we decided to keep heading down. We will be in Mag Bay tonight and try for Mackerel then decide on where to go. Our sardines have cured up well and it looks like a very good load of bait. The weather is nice and it has been an enjoyable ride so far. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Jan. 7, 2004
Good evening folks. We spent the day offshore today. Bait went alright last night We got what we needed for the day. Bait is going to be an issue, we are going to try again tonight. We had a nice day on quality fish . Only 8 tuna for the day. Four fish over 200  a couple of 150 pounders a 175 and  a 160 pounder. I posted some pictures of some of the bigger fish . Hans picked up the first big one, followed by Maurice, Art Brown and Gary with the last one into the dark. We will report again tomorrow. The weather is beautiful and everyone is feeling great. Andy Cates

Jan. 8, 2004
Good evening folks. Another day of quality fish. Not much until after lunch when we got a school that boiled up and we got a few bites. The fish are very hard to get to cooperate. Most spots don't boil up at all. We ended up with seven fish for the day smallest one about 150 and the two biggest caught by Hector Lopez a 192 and lucky Hans with a skiff ride bringing back a 236. The fish Hans caught was on a new Avet reel that we have been trying out, and it seemed to handle the load pretty good. The drags were a little sticky after going in the water, but they managed. We are on our way up to Mag Bay for bait. We won't be fishing until tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully we get more chances on big fish. We will report again tomorrow Andy Cates

Jan. 9, 2004
Good evening folks., We fished in a different area positioning us for bait at Mag Bay. We had action today on 40 to 140 pound fish. Most on the smaller end of things. We had a handful of fish over 100 pounds and biggest fish 140 pounds for the day. We got in the bay at 400 and have had good mackerel fishing . We still need more and are hoping to load up here tonight. We plan to be down below fishing the bigger fish tomorrow. Lets hope the bait keeps biting. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Jan. 10, 2004
Good evening folks. Today was as frustrating as it gets. Many stops on fish and no bites. We did hook a couple of big fish this morning and they both fell off. The rest of the day we spent stopping and going for nothing, we were not the chosen ones. We did pick up 2 wahoo on the troll. I posted our only picture of the only fish we caught of Ralph Cox and Bob Michner with a couple of wahoo. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Jan. 11, 2004
Good evening folks. We had a much better day today with Bob Michner starting us out with this 192 on the iron early. After a flurry on smaller fish 80 to 120 pounders, Ernie Wirth picked up a 209. With our next biggest fish of the day, Hector Lopez with a 240 pounder that we ended up chasing down with the big boat after it spooled his 80 pound test. We had another two cows that were lost in the skiff. Ralph Cox had a nice one on and the hook pulled. Hopefully we get some more chances tomorrow. We will report again, Andy Cates

Jan. 12, 2004
Good evening folks, What a great day we had. Fishing on the anchor today brought great results. We had 26 tuna today any where from 80 pounds to 341 pounds. The two top fish were caught by Bob Michner  a 341 pounder And Art Green with a 302 pounder. The scale went down from there with a 251 caught by Gordon Howe a 215 by Jerry Kopp, Walter Wood with a 215 pounder and Bud Prindle with a 230 pounder. There were other nice fish caught as well. Another dozen fish from 120 to 190 and another 10 fish in the 80 to 100 pound range. The Bigger fish were caught with the kite or on the balloon with squid. The sardine caught cows were on small balloons and mackerel fly line brought in a couple of nice ones as well. We are going to fish here again tomorrow and we will report again then, Andy Cates

Good evening folks. The weather here today was horrible. Rain and wind all day long. Lucky for us we were able to get the anchor to hang and stay put all afternoon. With the weather we had less guys fishing but still managed four fish over two hundred pounds. Ernie Wirth started us off with this 225 on the kite. Hector Lopez scored again with a 280 pounder on the balloon with squid. Gordon Howe had a 258 on a sardine and balloon and Hans finished us off with a 236 on balloon and squid. We are going to try here again tomorrow we are hoping the weather is better. Andy Cates

Good evening folks, bait fishing was very tough last night. The area were we had it the other night was dry. We fished it until 400 in the morning and then went out to the fishing grounds. We picked up only a couple of fish , a 120 pounder and 150 pounder and then started to head up towards Mag Bay. If we would have seen more sign we may have stuck around longer. We are going to be in the bait grounds tonight at 1030 . The bait fishing depends on where we fish tomorrow. I would like to get down to an area where there has been good sign of 60 to 100 pound fish to finish off with some action . It all depends on how long it takes to get mackerel. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Jan. 16, 2004
Good evening folks. We finished up with good action anchored up on one of the lower banks. The grade of fish were 60 to 100 pounds and mostly caught on the mackerel. They didn't have much interest in the kite but the balloon and sardine worked well. The guys had a great time and was much less impact than some of the other fishing we did. It was a great way to finish of with action. We will be traveling up tonight and the weather reports sound good, hopefully it sustains, We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Jan. 17, 2004
Good evening folks. We had a nice day of travel. We had good weather and smooth seas. We got the boat all cleaned up in the morning and the rest of the gear stowed . We spent the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the day. We are all looking forward to watching football on the satellite TV tomorrow with disputes on favorite teams. It looks like we will be in right at 900 Monday morning . We will have an updated ETA tomorrow. Andy Cates
