January 2003

Jan 1st
hello and happy new year to everyone. Here is the first report for 2003. We started the day at San Pablo in hopes of scratching some yellowtail. we ended up having a really good day of fishing. Jeff Bruner caught the first yellow, and things kept rolling right along. We were busy for most of the day, although it slowed down about 3 p.m.. The Yo Yo jigs and dropper loop rigs were the most productive methods. We are going to wrap up our trip here, and be back in San Diego on Fri the 3rd. We had a great trip, and everyone had a fun time fishing together. I highly recommend the new year special 8 day. Again a happy new year to all, and good fishing as well. Jeff DeBuys and crew

Jan 2nd
good morning everyone, we are headed back to san Diego today, and will back tomorrow the 3rd at 0800. the weather is good and most guys are relaxing today. We depart the 4th on a 15 day trip, so we will report back then. Sea ya, Jeff and crew

Jan. 4th
hello and good afternoon everyone. We departed San Diego around 11:00 this morning on a 15 day trip. The bait situation is in excellent shape, and we have a good supply of sardines. The weather is epic, around 80 degrees and flat calm seas. We are headed south, with no particular spot in mind right now. Our plan is to try for some bait at some point and then pick our starting destination. We will report back again tomorrow. Jeff and crew

Jan. 6th
hello everyone, not much to report here yet. We spent yesterday traveling and doing various projects on the boat, as well as a seminar to brush up on a couple of bait catching techniques. We did watch 2 playoff games on the satellite TV, and that was the highlight of our day. Today we will have a more detailed tackle seminar on tuna fishing, and spend the day rigging and outfitting everyone. We don't have a starting destination yet, but we are going to try for some bigger baits tonight , mackerel being the choice bait. The weather is very nice, and we hope it continues. That pretty much sums up our report, so we will have another one tomorrow. sea ya then, Jeff and crew

Jan. 7th
good morning folks, not much to report here, but here is what we know. Yesterday we spent the early part of the day focusing on our tuna seminar, and going over various rigs and  techniques for tuna fishing. The rest of the day we spooled new line and basically got everyone rigged up. the highlight of the day was a jig strike on albacore that produced 2 fish 25 lb. fish in a area pretty far south for them. We did stop and catch a couple of tanks of beautiful green mackerel last night to add to our bait supply. As for today we have another tackle seminar, and rigging to do. We have come to a fork in the road and have to make a move one way or another. With the reports I received, we have chosen to try on the mainland around Cleophus bank. With not too many options around, we hope to make a trip there. The weather is still good, and we think it will continue. Wish us luck. we will have another report tomorrow. Jeff and crew

Jan. 7th
hello everyone, here is the latest report for Jan 7th.  Today we traveled and fished our way down the coast.  We eventually made it down to the lower banks and saw some signal on one of them and fished for a couple of hours before dark. We ended up with 15 tuna, 85 to 120 lbs. I would say half of them are 100 lbs. or better. We were on our way to Cleophus bank, but we are going to check this place out tomorrow in hopes of some sign of bigger fish. We had good kite action, as well as sardines working on 80 to 100 lb. line. The weather is still good and we will have another report tomorrow. Sea ya then, Jeff Debuys.

Jan. 8th
First the bad news,  We are having difficulties send e-mail and photos. Something in cyberspace is blocking our reports.  So we will be calling in our reports.  Now for some good news.  With the good sign of fish we had yesterday afternoon we decided to give it another shot today.  We ended up with 14 fish over 100 with 3 of those in the 120 lb plus size. And there were also dozen and a half fish landed in the 80-100 lb. class.    A flylined sardine or a squid on the kite have been the hot ticket. The only down side was we lost a couple of cows. That would have made for a perfect day.  But all in all still a wonderful day of fishing.  Weather down here is amazing. Sea Ya, Jeff and Crew.

Jan. 9th
Today the fishing did a 180 flip on us. We gave it our best trying and by 12 noon there were only 4 fish landed.  Those were 80 lb. class fish.  There is no sign of tuna so we are now traveling down to Cleophus Bank.  We should be there about 12 noon on Friday.  We will try to give you a report tomorrow evening. Sea ya, Jeff and Crew.

Jan. 10th
Good Evening everyone, here is our report for today.  We arrived in the Cleophus Bank area at 12 noon.  We stopped a little short of the area.  We had a good sign of fish show up before we got to the bank and we stopped on it.  From 12 noon until dark we had excellent fishing on Yellowfin Tuna.  At times the tuna were biting mackerel and 100 lb. test right next to the boat.  No casting ability needed.  Most of the day we had a steady bite.  The largest fish was 140 lb., we had two that are about 120 lb. and another 12 fish right around 100 lbs. The rest of the fish @ 4 dozen were in the 80 to 90 lb. class.  Excellent grade of tuna.  With this for only an afternoon of fishing we are hoping this quality of fishing will start first thing in the morning and continue all day tomorrow.  For those of you who wonder about the weather, in a word, perfect. Sea ya, Jeff and crew.

Jan. 11th
Good Evening everyone from Cleophus Bank.  We had what I would call an outstanding day here on the bank.  The highlight of the day was a 190 lb. yellowfin landed by Ron Hiaro. Also landing a quality fish was Ralph Cox aka Dr. Rafa.  Rafa's fish is @ 160 lbs.  We have two other fish in that same size as well. A couple of 140 lb. fish, a 120 lb. fish and another half dozen from 100 to 120 lbs. The rest of the fish were a solid 70 to 90 pound class.  The kite was productive as well as skipjacks and sardines.  Excellent weather once again.  We will back at it again here tomorrow.  Sea ya, Jeff and crew.

Jan. 12th
Good Evening again from Cleophus Bank.  We had a banner day on quality yellowfin tuna.  We started the day with a self imposed minimum size of 100lb. With that in mind we still landed 3 dozen.  The largest of the day landed was @ 185 lbs., 2 in the 170 lb. class, 3 in the 160 lb. class, 2 in 150 lb. class, 6 in the 130-140 lb. class and the rest were 100 to 130 lbs.  Just a wonderful day of tuna fishing.  We had a couple of heartbreaks on the "cows".  Most notable was Wayne Honda, who lost a fish @ 250 lbs. when his 200 lb. mono leader broke.  Wayne hooked his cow during his Kite rotation. Dr. Rafa hooked and landed a 170 tuna on a flylinned skipjack. The squid or mackerel on the kite or a flylinned skipjack have been the ticket for the cows.  Sardines are producing the numbers but the size of the "dine" fish is a little smaller.

We will spend another morning here in hopes of getting a couple of cows on board.  We have saved a little room just in case we landed a couple.  After that we will go scouting and search out new fishing areas down in this area.  This is one of those trips that you wish you were on board.  For the lucky ones who are on board for this trip they are having the time of their life.  Sea ya, Jeff and crew.

Jan 13th
Good Evening from Cleophus Bank.  The tuna are still hear but they were not in the biting mood today.  We did get a nice one @ 175 lbs., a handful between 80-100 lbs and released 20 of the 70-80 lb. fish.  We have one more day here and we are still hoping for a couple of cows.  The slammer is just about completely full, but I am sure we can find room for a cow or two if we are lucky enough to get them.  So tomorrow will be trophies only.  Everything else will be released. Weather has been excellent the whole time here.  Sea ya, Jeff and the crew.

Jan. 14th
Well we finally landed a few trophy yellowfin tuna this morning.  We started fishing in the dark with skipjack and we landed 1 fish over 300 lbs. and 2 fish over 200 lbs.  The biggie for the morning was a 308 lb. YFT landed by Hector Lopez, next was a 256 lb. YFT by Gary Grimaud and finally a 200 lb. YFT by Bud Prindle.  Theses are taped out weights and usually the formula is very accurate.  We also released another dozen fish from 100-120 lbs.  And its only 10 AM. We do not have any room to keep any more fish.  We have another day of fishing left but it will be all catch and release.  I can honestly say that fishing on this trip was better than many trip to the "Islands".  So if you are wondering what the long range fleet will do if the "Islands" stay closed this is one place we will be fishing.  Everyone on this trip was sure glad they took a "chance" and just went fishing.  Sea ya, Jeff and crew.

Jan.15th
Good evening everyone, we are on the way home to San Diego.  Fishing was outstanding on this trip. We spent most of yesterday catch and releasing fish.  At dark we called it a trip and head to San Diego. We should make it to San Diego on the 19th at @ 8 AM.  We have excellent traveling weather and the forecast is for it to hold all the way home.  Sea ya, Jeff and crew.

Jan. 16th
Once we return to San Diego we will post the photos that we have for trips and we several great shots.  A big thanks to Izorline as both big fish were landed on Izorline Mono. For those of you who would to meet the boat when return home, eta is 8 AM Sunday the 19th. Sea ya, Jeff and crew.

Jan. 19th
