February 2006

Feb. 1

Sorry for the lack of reports from the boat, we had trouble sending reports thru our satellite system. As you already know we had very good fishing at Hurricane Bank and are presently traveling up the coast fishing a couple  of our favorite Yellowtail areas as we go, trying to break up the ride.

One thing of note we did see today at Alijos Rocks was pretty good sign of twenty to forty pound Yellowfin Tuna, this was in 64.38 water temperature and could be a very good indicating of things to come this spring.  Yellowtail fishing today was fair overall on fish 18 to 40 lbs. Our ride going homeward bound has consisted of twenty knots of wind and moderate to choppy sea state, the forecasts for the next three days is for improving weather conditions.

As far as our stay at hurricane Bank we caught fish on all applications but the top producing methods for big cow fish was squid used under the kites and chunking during the day light hrs and jigs and jigs, chunks and mackerel down a sinker type rig at night. We had good fishing during the day but what really stands out is the night bites we experienced every night at Hurricane Bank with fish not only biting close to the boat but swimming around the boat under the lights making for a very exciting rail time.

The over all grade of fish is very impressive with a good percentage of big cows to go along with the outstanding   one hundred and sixty to one hundred and ninety pound average fish. The size of the two hundred pound tuna is equally as impressive with most of the cows ranging anywhere from two hundred and thirty to two hundred and ninety pounds, very few of the big tuna are just over the mark. There appeared to be fair to good sign of this fish and we are all hoping it holds up to produce equally as outstanding trip as this for our long range fleet the remainder of the 2006 winter season.

Feb. 6th,

Good morning folks. We left yesterday and are on our way down the beach. Our plan is to get some bigger bait and hopefully more squid the next couple of days. We will then spend a day on the beach checking out the big fish grounds off of Mag bay.
The trip has been made into a 20 day adventure to give us the option of Clipperton Island. We will report again tomorrow

Feb. 7th,

Good morning folks. So far the weather has been great. We are looking forward to fishing bait tonight and then being in the Mag bay area the next day.
Hopefully we can get a couple of boxes of mackerel and then spend time drifting for squid before the night is over. We are just going day by day here right now. Hoping that we see sign of tuna on the beach to do this for a couple of days before deciding what next.
With the weather outlook I feel good about tomorrow , it will be great conditions for looking offshore. We will report again tomorrow.

Feb. 9th,

Good morning folks. We caught a great load of mackerel yesterday and then spent the afternoon around the banks west of Cabo. We did see signs of fish. They sure did not bite. Although we did catch one 100 pound tuna in the afternoon. One long drift after dark and we came up empty on the squid.
Today we are going to be up were the American Angler finished off last  trip. Right around where we have been fishing since October. We will report again tomorrow

Feb. 10th,

Good evening folks. We ended up leaving the beach area last night after a very frustrating day. Any decent size fish we did see would not bite. The water was quite a bit cooler and green. We hammered the porpoise schools until dark and then left for the Bank. We will be there tomorrow at lunch time. We will report again
on our progress.

Feb. 12th,

Good morning folks. Yesterday brought us some wahoo action but very little on the tuna. Only two tuna caught for the afternoon and the entire night. Very much a disappointment from what has been going on here.
So far this morning a dozen wahoo and some small tuna for chunk bait. No sign of bigger fish so far today.
We will report again tomorrow.
Andy Cates

Feb. 13th,

Good morning folks. More of the same like yesterday. Very little tuna but decent wahoo action. The  only couple of tuna were mid grade fish nothing all that big. The night time brought more disappointment with nothing at all. A glimmer of hope with a 286 and a couple of other fish caught mid morning.
There is sign of bigger fish out off the edge of the bank. Maybe today will be the turning point. Gary Teraoka wound in the big one that was tail wrapped  on the kite.
We will report again tomorrow.

Feb. 15th,

Good morning folks. Another slow day yesterday on tuna but we did manage to continue to pick at
the wahoo. Only 2 tuna caught throughout the day. A 233 again by Herve Gehin and a 195 caught by François Mangot..
After dinner we had a nice school get on us and we managed to hook some. Only 10 fish for the night but compared to what it has been it seemed like a Bonanza. François Mangot with a 205 Tom Jackson a 229 and Gerry Miller a 248 early in the morning. Other fish from 120 to 190.
Conditions are poor here this morning. We are hoping for a change. We will report again tomorrow.

Feb. 17th,

Good morning folks. Yesterday morning started out with a nice fish, a 248 caught by Gerry Miller and one other mid range size. The rest of the day was the same as its been. Scratch wahoo throughout the day and then a little hit after dark. Tom Jackson got lucky again with another 230 pounder and Ben Kita with a 195. The  days seem to end about the same 13 wahoo and 13 tuna.
So far this morning we have 14 wahoo and one 80 pound tuna caught on the wahoo gear. We are going to grind it out another 2 days and then we will be on our way to the Cape. The report from the beach area was just how we left it.
We will report again tomorrow
Andy Cates

Feb. 18th,

Good morning folks.  The tuna fishing is not improving as we would hope although the wahoo have continued to bite, with another 28 nice ones coming aboard after yesterday's report.  Only 8 tuna though with the biggest one at 180 pounds picked up by Carl Newton after dark.  We plan on spending one more day here and if things do not change we are going to spend the last day in by the beach.  So far today looks slower than any other day.  Just a couple of wahoo and six tuna from 80 to 125 pounds.  Hopefully we'll see a better show tonight.

Feb. 19th,

Good morning folks.  We stayed at the bank until after dark but with very little participation and only a handful of tuna at that point we took off for the inside.  We are hoping to get some action or maybe a couple of big fish at the Jamie bank area.  After 8 days of relatively slow fishing at the Hurricane bank compared to what it has been, any change sounds appealing.  Hopefully we can get some bait and then end the trip with a hot day.

Feb. 22nd,

Good afternoon folks.  So far we are having nice weather on our way home from Cabo.  We finished our trip yesterday . After finding that the water on the beach had turned over, a chilly 66.9 degrees with no sign of tuna, we found a spot with great action on reef fish.  Sierra mackerel were the game fish of the day.  What a lot of fun that was.  Fast sharp toothed fish.  Perfect light line action fish.  Everyone had a great time and some good laughs trying to catch them.  It was definitely something these guys had never done, and something I will look forward to again if we have some spare time.  We will report again tomorrow.
