February 2003

Feb. 23rd

Hello everyone, we are out of the harbor after a 5 week rest.  We departed yesterday on a 20 day adventure. We loaded the boat with some choice sardines. And are headed down to try for mackerel. We are going to keep our eyes open along the way in hopes of running into some bluefin or albacore. The weather has been threatening rain, but none so far. Today we will be doing various projects onboard readying ourselves for the days ahead. other than a lot of travel, not too much to report. We will talk to you all later. Jeff and crew

Feb. 24th

Good afternoon folks, not too much to report today traveling down, except good weather and outstanding albacore fishing. We had numerous jig strikes all day and at the end of the day got on a school that wanted to bite. These fish are a little smaller grade than the ones the Polaris Supreme got on last week, with most being 15 to 20 lbs. and a few bigger ones. It is about about a day and half run from San Diego. We are still headed to the ridge to try for mackerel on Tues night. We hope to get on some bluefin before we start looking for the YFT. Wish us luck. sea ya later, Jeff and crew

Good afternoon folks, here is the report for today. We pretty much worked our way down to the lower end of the ridge to catch mackerel tonight. In our travels we ran across a nice school of bluefin this morning. We drifted on it for a couple of hours, and caught few fish that were from 50 to 75 lbs. There was some volume around, but they were reluctant to bite. We are thankful for what we got. The rest of the day was spent traveling to the bait grounds, without seeing too much. The weather is still good and we hope it continues. Bait is in the forecast for tonight, and we will decide which way to point the bow after we top off. Until then, get ready for a early summer. Sea ya later, Jeff and crew

We are having troubles with our sat. internet connection, so we will be phoning in our reports.  Hopefully when we get further south we can get connected to a different sat. and the problems will fix themselves.  Right now we are heading out to hurricane Bank.  There have been good reports of wahoo on the bank.  We should arrive there @ 12 midnight.  Today we had excellent traveling weather and took care of our tuna and wahoo seminars.

Feb. 28th

Just a quick report from Hurricane Bank.  Excellent day of wahoo fishing.  Amazing grade of hoos, 40 to 60 lbs. Everyone got their excitement early and we spend the rest of the day tuna fishing. Excellent sign of tuna here, we still have two hooked up right now (5 PM).  Largest fish so far today is @ 170 lbs., also landed a  160, 150 lbs. and the rest of the fish are 100-120 lbs in size.  Heartbreak of the day was that we lost a cow.  The fish nearly spooled our kite rig.    We got the angler out on the skiff and fought it for 1.5 hours. The fish eventually died, and sank. Even with the heavy gear we couldn't raise the fish up. With this great sign of tuna here we will be sticking around bank.  The weather is perfect for kite fishing and that's what the tuna are biting best. Jeff and crew.
