December 2006

Dec. 1st, 2006
Good morning folks. We left the Bank yesterday after a slow day with just 8 wahoo and 1 tuna. We did finally get a chance at a big one that almost spooled the Kite gear, but it broke off. We are going to look at Clarion if we see signs, great, if not we will continue in and be at Puerto Vallarta Sunday morning. That will give us 3 days and a morning to try for big ones. The weather is finally better and the ride is nice.

Good morning folks. After 2 days we made it into P.V. and so far the big run has not changed our luck. Offshore we found bird schools with small fish and skipjack and on the shallow it looks to be very little at best. It is still early but so far not good. Hope our luck and the fishing changes.

Dec. 4th, 2006

Good morning folks. We left P.V yesterday on another rode trip . What fish we did catch yesterday were small and not what we were after. Tonight we will be up on the finger bank for bait and then with the sign of big fish showing up on the lower banks we will spend our last 2 days there. The weather in that area shows good for the next few days. Which alone will be a vast improvement from what we have now.
One last ditch effort for big fish , If ever I hope the next 2 days we get some chances. We will report tomorrow on what we see and catch the area we will be in is perfect for 10 day trips and I hope it is what we have been waiting for.

Dec. 5th, 2006

Good evening folks. Bait fishing went well last night and then spent the day on the lower banks below Mag Bay. Finally  our luck changed and we found what we were looking for. I wish we had more time but fortunately we also have a full day tomorrow to catch more trophies. The 12 tuna were caught today with the smallest one 170 pounds and 8 fish over 200 pounds biggest fish caught by Carl Newton a whopping 286 pounder.
The lower banks are showing sign for the later 10 day trips for those of you that are interested in this big fish we have a 10 day trip that leaves Dec 11 to the 22 If you have the time this might be a chance at big fish. Call the office at 619 224 3857 and talk to Sarah or Linda Palm.
We will report again tomorrow

REMARKS:    Started the trip at hurricane bank for some good size yellowfin and wahoo.  As the weather kicked up we headed to the Cleophus area looking for calmer seas and big yellowfin, the fishing part did not pan out.   We ended the trip with good fishing at the lower ridge area, this area looks like the place to target on our 10-day trip leaving on December 11.

Dec 13

We will be fishing at the13 fathom spot today small tuna and yellowtail will be the target. Big fish grounds the next day after getting mackerel.

Dec 14

We had great fishing on small grade tuna yesterday every one got loosened up with the variety of the ridge. Today we will be trying for big fish after good bait fishing last night.

Dec. 15th

Good morning folks. Yesterday was slow down in the Big fish grounds, but not for lack of fish. A few mind boggling sonar schools that would not bite. Oh , they would boil around but as they say you have to get the right one. David Choate was the top dog yesterday with a 233 and just 3 other fish under 200 for the day.
Today there was better sign of fish but still hard to get a bite. Alan Limbergh caught a personal best at 240 after a couple of early losses. And Mark Moffet finally got his 210 pounder after a frustrating day. Bob James pulled off a 244 after a sweet tail wrapped fish. We will try it again tomorrow.

Dec. 16th

Good evening folks. Another spotty day down in the big fish grounds. Although bites are hard to get the quality is here with just a handful of fish today the big ones were highlighted with a 303 caught by Charlie Been and a 290 caught by Bob Mitchell on 80 pound test. What a lucky shot that was.
Still good sign of fish just getting a bite is another story. One more day down here and hopefully we finish with a bang.

Dec. 17th

Good evening folks. Things changed for the better down in the big fish grounds. We found what we were after with great results. Finishing the day with 24 tuna , 11 tuna were 210 to 295 and two fish over 300, a 314 and 302 estimated weights on all fish so we will see at the dock.
Chris Adams with a 302 and Larry Rutherford with the 314. Gary Getchen picked up a 270 and a 222 , Rick Rutherford went in a long skiff ride for a 287 and Bob Pucket with a 240 in the evening. The list goes on but Mark Moffet handed off a fish to a buddy that ended up 270 and Erik Olson was awfully happy about that. Also David Choate with a 237 and a 266 for the day
With the success of today we found it hard to pass up another day and decided to spend our last day down in the big fish grounds. That will only give us a morning the following day for possibly Dorado and maybe a few yellowtail.
We will report again tomorrow

Dec. 19th

Good morning folks. Staying another day worked out well. The people that did not get a chance at a cow got one yesterday.
Starting off a little slow in the morning and then picking up in the afternoon with a stop until dark. The three boats that were down here all did well the fish spread out and bit. Something we really like to see.

Beth Smith pulled in a 266 and a 280. Dave Choate with another 210 and the hooks pulled on a real nice one right at color. Julian Stokes with a 270,Tyler Noriego with a 287, Bob Mitchell with a 288, Larry Rutherford with a 233 and a few more big ones to go with the day. The action on the last stop was a little too much. At one time we had 15 fish on and made things a little too fast until it tapered off. Most of the big fish came later after the smoke cleared. Bottom line there are some chances of once in a lifetime fish down here.  Today we are trying for Dorado and then going home after a morning of action

Dec. 20th

Good morning folks. We finished the trip with good action on Dorado for the RSW and an amazing show of striped marlin. I do not know how many we released but it was a lot. There were school of dorado and schools and pods of marlin chasing the boat for miles. With this sign of life on the middle part of the ridge and 77.5 degree water you can only think that this fall season should stretch well into January and February.
With the report from the Excel yesterday of over 30 good grade tuna from the lower banks it just seems to be getting better.
We do have an 8 day trip leaving Dec 26 that has room and will give 3 full days in the big fish grounds. Plenty of time to get big ones if the bite is on. Call the office to get a prime spot.

Dec. 28th

As reported by SAT phone, by Captain Julio Ochoa

Left the dock on the current 8-day New Years Special trip sailing on the 26th.  Got a nice load of bait, good mix, about 20% mackerel. So we will not have to stop for bait tonight.  Stopped at the ridge for a few small grade fish, the weather has kicked up.  Will be at the area where the giant yellowfin tuna where caught on the last trip tomorrow, Friday the 29th.  There are five boat heading for this area in search for the bigger fish---hope they are still there.
