December 2002

Dec 1 2002
Good morning folks, Our bait fishing went well yesterday at the South end of Cedros. We had a tank of 8 to 10 inch mackerel and enough for chunk bait by 3:00. We did not do very well on the squid, so we will try again tonight.

The weather is nice and the tropical reports are clear of any storms. Things look pretty good so far. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Dec 2 2002
Good morning folks. We picked up about 40 squid last night to supplement what we already had in the freezer. We could use more we just ran out of time. As it is right now we won't get to the bank until 500 in the morning. We were hoping to get there earlier to try for flying fish, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. It started raining last night after dinner and has not let up. It is not very windy so regardless of it being wet the seas are pretty calm. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Dec 3 2002
Good afternoon folks. So far Hurricane Bank has been very disappointing. With 9 wahoo and one 100 pound tuna to show for today. There is virtually no sign of decent size fish, our only hope is they move in. So far all I can say is we are going to keep trying and hoping for some change for the better. The fishing could do a 180 at anytime. The weather is much better after a bumpy ride last night. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

December 4, 2002
Good morning folks.  Yesterday afternoon, Joe Wildenberg slipped and fell hurting his leg. Joe is stable and looks like he is will be fine.  We will be taking him to Cabo and arrive about 6:00 pm tomorrow. First thing is to get Joe safely off the boat and back home. We then will resume our fishing.  Will have 6 days to fish after this is taken care of.  Will report tomorrow.

Dec 6 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was spent traveling to Cabo. We delivered Joe safely at about 6:00 in the evening. A very professional crew of Navy personal came to meet us. The transfer lasted about an hour and a half. The navy does a full inspection of all boats entering the port and we were no exception. Joe was stable and in very good hands when we left. Today we will be fishing the Mag Bay area in hopes of finding tuna on porpoise. The weather is beautiful and everyone is in good spirits.  Wish us luck, so far things have been very tough on us. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Dec 7 2002
Good morning folks. The Mag Bay area produced action in the morning but quickly died at lunch time. Yellowfin tuna on porpoise boiling up on the sardine and coming right to the corner was sure fun while it lasted. The fish were good size, average fish around 60 pounds some bigger with just a few smaller. 23 tuna 2 wahoo and a few dorado were kept for our efforts. Reports came out from an area near Puerto Vallarta on good fishing on 80 to 125 fish. We tanked up on mackerel and we are traveling again. We will be there early tomorrow morning. Hopefully we can salvage this trip. We will have three and a half days to do it. We will be back in Cabo on the 12th. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Dec 8 2002
Good afternoon folks. We arrived at Tres Marias this morning and the weather was nice and there is good sign of fish. Its hard to say what is going to happen, we have had some chances at some better size fish but most of what we have caught is 70 to 90 pounds. We did get one fish about 130 but lost 5 others that seemed heavy during that hit. So far today we have 25 tuna, there has been some action I just hope we can make the most out of those brief opportunities on the bigger size fish. So far today we have not. It has been a long trip so far with all the traveling and it looks like we finally have something to work with.
We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Dec 10 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was another day of action on 60 to 90 pound fish. Only a few fish in the hundred pound range and really less sign today of anything well over a hundred. Today we are really going to focus on the chunk and maybe then we will see some results on better size fish. None the less it has been very fun fishing with more action on the kite then the previous day. The weather is still very nice and reports from above sound nice as well. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Dec 11 2002
Yesterday was yet another great day of fishing. Once again most of the fish today were 70 to 90 pound. We had a few more fish today in the hundred pound range and one about 140 caught by Mike Yamamoto. It looks like that one will take the J.P but there are a couple of other contenders. Steady fishing all day and great action on the kite in the afternoon. This morning was a bit slower only 12 tuna before we left at 10:00 in the
morning one fish about 110 pounds was the big one of the morning. None the less as we left we still saw great sign of fish and good potential for any coming trips. This Puerto Vallarta area really saved us this trip and  everyone really had a great time. We will be in Cabo tomorrow morning at 830 in the morning to drop off a few people. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Dec. 27th

Good morning everyone, and happy holidays to all. We departed San Diego yesterday on our annual 8 day New Years trip. We stopped and topped off on sardines, which are in excellent shape for our trip. The weather is good, and our passengers are in high spirits in anticipation of fun filled fishing trip. Today we have various projects, as well as a tackle seminar to go over various techniques, as well as general fishing information for the trip. We have decided to start at Alijos Rocks, in hopes of first finding favorable conditions, as well as some biting fish. Over all, I think water conditions are good on the ridge and surrounding areas, so lets keep our fingers crossed. We should arrive at Alijos around 0800 tomorrow, and hopefully have a favorable report from there. Until then, happy holidays& tight lines. Jeff and crew

Dec. 28th
Good evening everyone, here is the report for Dec 28th. First of all I can't say enough about the weather. It is absolutely flat calm out at the rocks today. We arrived at 0900 and gave the place a thorough look around, and didn't see very much. We finally found a few tuna and dropped the anchor. It took a while for them to get with it, we didn't have very good current, but we managed to keep a few going all day. We did have some decent flurries with 4 to 6 going. The grade is the same as it has been here for the last few months, 50 to 80 lbers. We did not have enough wind for the kite, and i think we could have done better if we could have deployed them. The final tally for the day is 50 tuna and 1 lonesome yellowtail. We are going to try here again tomorrow, in hopes we have better current, and possibly some wind, ( but not too much).  We will report again tomorrow. sea ya jeff and crew.

Dec. 29th
hello everyone, the report for the 29th is as follows. Today we spent at Alijos again, after a night trying for a night bite on yellowtail. we managed 8 yellows, and 2 amberjack last night. today we scratched away on that good grade tuna, with some better flurries at times. We had ample wind for the kite, and got some action there as well as the sardines. We ended up with 60 tuna for the day, and a few yellowtail. The weather is windy, and a bit choppy, we hope it doesn't get any worse. We will try here again tomorrow in hopes of another day like today. Wish us luck! sea ya later, Jeff DeBuys

Dec. 30th
hello everyone, here is the report for the 30th. We experienced harsh conditions at alijos today, with lots and lots of wind to go with a large swell. We did not have much current, and that made it really hard to fish a sardine. We did get a few fish on the kite, and a few on sardine, but the day was pretty slow overall. We departed around dark and headed inside to try the area that has been holding some tuna, in hopes of scratching a decent day of fishing. Wish us luck, and we will hopefully have a good report later on. Sea ya then, Jeff and crew

Dec. 31st
good afternoon everyone, here is the last report for 2002. We fished inside today, and had excellent fishing on yellowfin tuna. We drove around for a couple of hours, and got on a school that we drifted on for most of the day. The fish were school fish, 25 to 50 lbs., and we really had a great time staying steady all day. The weather was a real plus also, 10 knots for the most part. We are on our way to San Pablo to try for yellowtail tomorrow, and finish our trip there. We want to wish everyone a happy new year, and may 2003 be as productive this last year. Sea ya in 03, Jeff and crew
