August 2005

August 1st, 2005

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had a nice day of trophy size yellowtail fishing. We had decent action almost all day with the best fishing in the morning and afternoon. The yellows were 28 to 40 pound fish and definitely a challenge. Heavy casualties in the rocks and weeds. it really was challenging Sportfishing. good weather and good fishing to make up for the first day. So far this morning we are in trouble again with nothing to show for in the pursuit of albacore. We are really hoping for that to change.

August 2nd, 2005

Good morning folks.
We finished off in the albacore area. We did see a lot of life below there,  just nothing that would bite. Small schools of Yellowfin  and Bluefin for a pretty long stretch. The albacore fishing was decent for what has been going on. A couple of nice drifts in the afternoon on 25 to 35 pound albacore finished things off nicely. We always seem to want more but with how tough fishing is we were happy to get some action .
We leave on another 4 day today we will report again tomorrow

August 3rd 2005

Good morning folks.

We started out good this morning with a early bite for 70 albacore. We continued to have various drifts throughout the day and put together a nice day of fishing. The style of albacore fishing is perfect. Nice long drifts. Everyone has a chance to try a few baits and hook a few fish. Every once in a while they start to bite and then back off to 2 to 3 going. The classic "Plunker Style of albie fishing." . We decided to head down and try our luck at some trophy fishing at the Island . We will report again tomorrow.

August 4th, 2005

Good morning folks. We had a nice day at the Island. Good action in the morning and then slowed down to a pick the rest of the day. Once again, nice size yellowtail. 25 to 40 pound fish. Everyone had chances at these brutes . Surprisingly enough we did not lose as many as normal. The guys were using heavy line and really putting the hurt on the fish. Epic weather and great fishing. That's what its all about. We are going back up to the albacore grounds in hopes of more action to finish the trip. We will report again tomorrow

August 5th, 2005

Good morning folks.
Another one of those tough days offshore.
After trying different spots of fish for most of the day it was obvious today was not our lucky day. Nice batches of albacore for very little or no bites. We continued with the plague right up to dark. frustrating not finding the right school to bite.  We are leaving on a five day trip today. The charter is more interested in fishing Islands than offshore .After yesterday that sounds fine by me. We will report again tomorrow.

August 7th, 2005

Good morning folks.
We have left on  the Ono Custom Rods 5 day trip and are on our way to the Island. Hopefully what little sign of tuna that has been here will increase. The chance at trophy size yellowtail looms as well. Spend a day here and take it from there. We will report again tomorrow.

August 8th, 2005

Good morning folks. Yesterday was a bit slow at the Island. We did manage to pick off 7 trophy size yellowfin and just 27 yellowtail. The tuna were all good size . 70 to 110 pounds.  Charles Tanaka landed one that is around 110 lbs. They put on good show just not in the mood to bite. Without a doubt our Jack pot fish will be impressive this trip. We decided to go inside and fish yellowtail, looking for some action and maybe a White seabass and Halibut . We will report again tomorrow.

August 9th, 2005

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had a great day of yellowtail fishing. Nice long drifts on 15 to 25 lb. yellows. Good action on the surface iron, bait and Yo-Yo jig. We stayed and fished until dark . The action was steady all day. Good weather and good fishing . Today we are offshore in 71.5 degree water hoping for yellowfin and maybe some Dorado on kelps. We will report again tomorrow.

August 10th,

Good morning folks. Yesterday was a great day of action on school size yellowfin. Fast pace fishing with plenty of bites to go around. Good sign of 12 to 20 pound fish and dorado mixed in as well. Ending the day with enough tuna and 40 dorado. Great weather and great fishing . What a joy today we are back at Guadalupe and enjoying a morning of trophy size yellowtail. Also hoping for another hit on big tuna. we will report again tomorrow.

August 11th, 2005

Good morning folks. We had a nice morning yesterday starting with action on trophy yellowtail. Plenty of chances at the fish and plenty of losses. That's the name of the game. Tough fish to catch, they really get you in the rocks. Even the heavier line failed to produce. Our charter master, Mr. Ono pulled three from the rocks, including one that hit the yo-yo iron and topped the scales at 40 plus pounds. We finished the morning with 65 yellowtail and one nice tuna close to 100 pounds. Every year this charter a wonderful time and they always seem to catch plenty of fish too.

We are leaving on a 5 day today . The weather is nice. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

We got all the yellowfin and yellowtail we needed. We caught a nice drift off a kelp of smaller 15-30 lb yellowtail with a bunch of Dodo’s mixed in. The trophy 80-114 lb Yellowfin were all caught at Guadalupe. The weather behaved so well and was flat and calm.

August 13th, 2005

Good morning folks.
Yesterday we started off with some yellowtail action. It ended to soon. We did get a chance at some trophy size yellows and then were on the move. Next stop we came up with our jackpot tuna and a wahoo for one lucky angler. Biggest tuna about 110 pounds and down to 75 pounds. The afternoon brought a slow scratch on decent size tuna and a few losses from the sharks.
So far this morning we have scratched a dozen tuna and a few yellowtail . Biggest fish about 75 pounds. Decent sign of fish just not biting. Maybe later. We will report again tomorrow.

August 15th, 2005

Good afternoon folks.  We left the Island just after lunch. The sharks drove us out of there after landing 18 tuna and 13 yellowtail for the morning. It was a good show of fish and a nice way to finish up on more trophy size fish. We are on our way home and will be at the dock at 900 in the morning . See you then

A special thanks to Mega bait who also donated much to the raffle. Among the prizes was everything from tuna candy feathers, cedar plugs, TLD 15 reel, mustad hooks, t-shirts and more.   Fishing was just as exciting the first few days were pretty good and steady but the last few days at Guadalupe we got sharked .Despite the sharks we did manage to salvage some nice trophy yellowfin 100-80 lbs. Even a wahoo showed up.

REMARKS:              This was the 5 day Longfin Tackle trip, there were fish but you had to work at it. We got the bigger yellowfin tuna at Guadalupe but the sharks there were merciless. We sited schools of fish, yellowtail, big eye and yellowfin moving N at @ 25 miles pr hr. The one thing we had going for us was the weather which stayed nice the whole time and just picked up the last day on the way back.

August 22nd, 2005

Good morning folks. We left yesterday on a 7 day trip heading for Alijos rocks. Unfortunately there is Hurricane Hilary that is a big problem for us. We are fishing offshore this afternoon looking for kelps in hopes of dorado and tuna. Then fishing Cedros tomorrow for yellowtail. We are going to watch the storm and hope it passes in time for us to get a day at the rocks.

We may be at the island a couple of days waiting for a window for our next move. We will know more tomorrow and report then.

Good afternoon folks. After a great day of yellowtail fishing and great weather, we were soon shut down by the activity of Hurricane Hilary. The size and force of the storm made it not possible to go to Alijos. We are headed to Guadalupe in hopes of trophy tuna. The disappointment of the hurricane is over and a new hope of decent fishing at the Island. We will report again tomorrow.

REMARKS:  This was the Jeff Johnson 7 day Charter, which normally goes down to Alijos Rocks to hunt for the lager yellowfin. Unfortunately due to Hurricane Hillary in south west of the Cabo area they were not able to make it down there this time. This was quite a misfortune as for the last 5 yrs this trip has had a very successful trip down. From all the information they received the area was projected to be windy, choppy and the waters stirred up. Instead they ended up going to Cedros, Guadalupe and some off shore areas and we able to fish some YT and a few larger YF.

Great to spectacular fishing for school size yellowfin tuna on our first day of fishing.  With 35 dorado mixed in.  This is a 5-day United Anglers Org charter.   On to Guadalupe Island, looking for a few quality fish, as of Tuesday morning we have not found them. Keep looking, wish us luck.

August 31st, 2005
Good morning folks.

More of the same out at the Island. We scratched up a dozen trophies for most of the day . We ran out of there in the afternoon after the last half a dozen fish were eaten by Great White sharks. We spent the rest of the evening looking for yellows with not much luck.
40 to 70 pounds were the fish landed with a couple of fish over 100 pounds with just the head making it to the boat
It really is a site.
We decided to spend a day yellowtail fishing in at Benitos and Cedros. We will report again tomorrow
