August 2004

Aug. 1st
Good evening folks. As good as yesterday was, today was a complete let down. Things started off ok with a little hit in the morning and then went down hill from there. A lot of driving and stopping on fish that would not bite. None the less we were thankful for our first day of fishing and the guys were in good spirits even though it was tough fishing today. Tomorrow we leave on a 4 day trip and are hoping for better reports to go on for the next day. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug. 3rd
Good evening folks. We had a great afternoon of yellowtail fishing. Lots of action on various spots of boiling yellowtail. Wide open out of the gate and then down to a nice easy pick. Everyone had a good time and let off some steam with the action we are all hoping for. The yellowtail were anywhere from 12 to 18 pounds with some bigger stand out fish mixed in. We will report again tomorrow Andy Cates

Aug. 4th
Good evening folks. We have had a great day of fishing. Great weather and nice size fish to go along. We have been steady since 9:00 in the morning and things got going after lunch. Keeping 4 to 6 fish going almost all afternoon. 54 yellowfin tuna from 30 to 75 pounds and plenty of good grade yellowtail to go with it. Some of the yellows up to 40 pounds. Most of the yellows 22 to 30 pounds with a few smaller and some bigger. All very nice fish We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Aug. 5th
Good evening folks. We finished off with a great day of albacore fishing. Our timing was good and we got up to the area and had a couple of nice drifts with some quick action to end the day. The guys were done at dinner time and we started to break down our gear. Fishing has really made a turn for the better and I hope it continues. We are leaving on a three day trip tomorrow hopefully things go as well as they did the last three days. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Aug. 7th
Good evening folks. Today was one of the better albacore fishing days of the year. Nice size fish and biting.
Great sign of fish and hopefully more to come. They were finally in the mode we would expect to see. Tomorrow we are going to look offshore for kelps and see if we can finish up with yellows and dorado. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug. 8th
Good evening folks. We spent the day looking for kelps. They were few and far between . Finishing the day with 39 yellowtail 10 dorado and 8 yellowfin tuna. Needless to say a far cry from yesterday. The albacore grounds sounded slower today but still good enough. We are leaving on a five day trip tomorrow . We will report again then. Andy Cates

Aug. 10th
Good evening folks. We spent the day fishing albacore. Scratching throughout the day and then finishing with a nice hit on the big grade albacore before dark. We ended up reaching our daily limit on albacore with the last hit as we were on our way to fish yellowtail tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug. 11th
Good evening folks. An epic day of yellowtail fishing. We left early with plenty of fish at 5:00. The grade was up a notch from the norm. Some of the better stops on 18 to 25 pound yellows with even bigger ones mixed in. Biting the surface iron, sardine and yo-yo jig. Really a nice day of fishing. Tomorrow we are going to try for yellowfin in hopes of some trophies. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Aug. 12th
Good evening, With a slow morning things looked poor. After lunch we had a nice pick on good trophy size yellowfin and yellowtail . Ending the day with 45 tuna and 24 large yellowtail. The day ended up just what we were looking for. I posted a couple of pictures. One of Joe Stickles with Jack Pt yellowfin over 100 pounds. Tomorrow we will fish albacore and try to finish off with more action. We will report then Andy Cates

Aug. 13th
Good evening folks. We finished off with good albacore action until late evening. At 6:00 we started breaking down our gear. A slow start today with only a few albacore before the afternoon push. Our last drift finishing off with a few small bluefin to add to our great catch. Now that everyone is wrapped up they can enjoy a nice evening and relax. Tomorrow we leave on a Ono Custom Rods annual five day trip. Hopefully things go as well as they did the last four days for Mr. Ono's group.

Aug. 14th
Good evening folks. We have just left the harbor and are heading to the Albacore grounds.  We have and excellent load of sardines as well as a great group of guys on the Ono Custom Rods Charter.

Aug. 15th
Good evening folks. Today was about as good as it gets for quality albacore fishing.  We started out a little slow but by mid morning we were cooking.  Most of the albacore are in the 30 lbs. plus range. We even had a couple of stops that went wide open on, Even biting 60 lb. but your best bet was on 40  or 30 lb. line.  We are going hunting for yellowfin or maybe some 'tails tomorrow. Mr. Ono

Aug. 16th
Good evening again. We picked away all day and ended up with  a couple of dozen yellowfins and about 10 'tails.  All nice size but just not very many.  Excellent weather here, good sign of fish but there are just not interested in what we have to offer. Trick today was using 30 or 40 lb. fluoro leaders. I was able to get 2 using fluoro and Joe Wu was high with 4.  We are off to sample some of the great yellowtail action that Benitos has had this season.  Hopefully it will continue for us.  Mr. Ono

Aug. 17th
Good evening from the decks of the Red Rooster III. After a couple of hours hunting down those yellows Andy finally found them.  Our first stop produced a nice load of yellows that bit the yo-yo iron with abandon.  Blue/white or Fried egg  colors worked the best. When those fish lost interest we made a move to the other side of the island.  With in minutes of dropping the anchor we were attack by yellows.  And for the next few hours it was amazing. The saying was "those who wanted to be hooked up are. those who do not are out of the water."  We have all the yellows we want and from the first day we have all the albacore we want so what's left?  We are going offshore tomorrow in search of more yellowfin tuna.  Mr. Ono

Aug. 18th
Good evening. Well if only the yellowfin would have co-operated a little more it would have been a perfect trip. As it stand it was near perfect.  We finished up the day with 45 quality YFTs and another 20 trophy side tails. Most of the YFTs were in the 25 to 45 lb. class but there were a couple that topped the scales at 50 plus pounds.  Weather looks great so the ride home will be comfortable. Should arrive in San Diego @ 8:30 AM.  We had a great bunch of guys with a good mix for veteran and rookies.  Every one had their chances at the YFTs and all have plenty of fish to bring home.  Now the planning starts for Ono Rods 2005 trip. Mr. Ono

Aug. 20th
Good evening folks. An epic day of albacore fishing. Nice size fish as well. 25 to 45 pound fish. Steady action through the morning a little lull around lunch and then biting as good as you would want in the afternoon. Tomorrow we are going to try for yellowtail, dorado and bluefin on the kelp paddies offshore. The weather is perfect. flat calm and patchy clouds. What a great day of fishing. we will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug. 21st
Good evening folks. We spent most of the day looking at kelps, and spots of smaller bluefin and yellowfin. We did manage to pick of 24 15 to 22 pound bluefin off adrift. The kelps had no sign of fish . Just a few decent size yellows of a couple of kelps. We ran out west and finished off our albacore fishing in the evening.
Wide open until dark. Although smaller grade fish. 18 to 22 pounds with some smaller and some bigger. We are leaving on a 7 day trip tomorrow. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug. 23rd
Good evening folks. We made a stop this afternoon and had good action on yellowtail. 18 to 25 pound fish until 500 in the evening. We are now on our way to the Rocks and will be there tomorrow after lunch. Daily limits today on the Yellows and hoping for action on wahoo and tuna tomorrow. I really hope we have a good report for you then. Andy Cates

Aug. 24th
Good evening folks. We spent most of the day working at the wahoo. We had steady action and heavy losses. With wahoo fishing , if you hook 10 fish you are lucky to catch 2. And that was the story for the day. We had hopes of decent tuna fishing with the sign we saw. Unfortunately the sharks made it impossible to land anything bigger than 30 pounds. We left the Rocks at sundown with 47 wahoo and a handful of keeper size tuna. The wahoo were nice size and everyone had plenty of chances. We are working our way back up to finish off with the yellowtail and then concentrate on yellowfin and the last day albacore We will report again tomorrow

Aug. 25th
Good evening folks. We finished our day with great yellowtail fishing. Fast action until sundown. We are now in position for Yellowfin and albacore and also there were a few Big eye caught in the fleet today. The albacore fishing sounded slow but hopefully in a couple of days it will pick back up. The weather is nice on our way out and we should have a comfortable night, We will be fishing first thing in the morning for a change. A lot of running so far, We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug. 26th
Good evening folks. Today was a bit slower than we hoped for. Although the tuna we caught were nice size 50 to 80 pounders. We searched around hoping to find something that would bite better. Tomorrow we are going to sit tight and see what we come up with as there is plenty of sign here, we will just wait them out. Right now we are catching some squid for bait. Maybe that will bring us more bites. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug. 28th
Good morning folks. Today we are trying for albacore. After yesterday everyone is pretty worn out. I think that will change after the first long fin hits the deck. yesterday was a very nice day. Finishing the day with 94 yellowfin and a dozen big yellowtail. Very nice grade of tuna, 90 pounds looks to be the biggest one.
We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Aug. 28th
Good evening folks. We finished early today and wrapped things up at 4:00. The weather and fishing was fantastic. Wide open  Slug albacore, starting first thing in the morning and going until after lunch. We strung together a few stops and called it a day. The grade of albacore was great 25 to 45 pounders and even a few bigger. Maybe a couple of 50 pound albacore. Tomorrow the boat leaves on a 5 day trip .
Hopefully things sustain. Andy Cates

Aug. 31st
Good morning folks, we departed on our five day trip with a full load of bait and we headed for the Albacore grounds south of San Diego.  Monday was good weather for looking offshore with ten to twelve knots of wind and very little seas.  Unfortunately our day did not go nearly as we had anticipated or hoped.  There were definitely some schools around but they were few and far between for us and the ones we did find bit very good but would not stay with the boat, one go around and they left us. We left at dark headed for Guadalupe Island and we plan on fishing Albacore on the way back up the line.
Yesterday was a typical day of good scratch fishing on forty to seventy pound tuna with a hand full of thirty to forty pound Yellowtail mixed in.  We caught a nice load of live bait after dark and plan on spending one more day here at this spectacular Island before heading back to the Albacore grounds.
We are sending a few pictures of the great quality fish here at Guadalupe Island.
