Aug 1 2003
Good morning folks. Yesterday was a fantastic day of albacore and bluefin fishing. The morning started with spots of bluefin 25 to 40 pounders crashing as far as you could see. Drifting along spots of fish would get on the boat and the action would stay steady. In the afternoon things really picked up and the albacore were up and ready. We limited out on the albie and picked up another 50 bluefin for the day. The weather was still great and sounds like it is going to sustain.
Today we are leaving on a three day trip hopefully the fishing  of this caliber continues. Andy Cates

Aug 2 2003
Good morning folks. We just shut the boat down on a giant ball of bait. We will drift along in the dark and begin fishing at day light. We are on a three day trip and we are in the area we were in the other day. Hoping to get a hit on albacore and bluefin. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Aug 3 2003
Good morning folks. Our morning started with a steady pick on albacore and bluefin. From day break until after breakfast we were keeping 8 to 15 going all the time. The albacore out weighed the bluefin with just 15 Bluefin mixed in for the day. By lunch time we started releasing albacore. We spent the afternoon hitting different spots of bluefin up top crashing around . We were able to get a few more through the albacore but not many. Today we are going to focus on bluefin and kelp paddies scratch out some yellows and call it a day. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Aug 5 2003
Good morning folks. We left on a 4 day trip yesterday and got a very nice load of bait. So far this morning all we have to report is a lot of wind and chop. Hopefully things smooth out for us. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug 6 2003
Good morning folks. Despite the weather, albacore fishing was to notch again. Everyone had enough by late afternoon and then we started looking at kelps. The average fish was 18 to 25 pounds with bigger ones mixed in. After a day of getting bounced around and the weather reported to increase we decided to go to Guadalupe for the day. There has been sign of fish here just not biting. Hopefully that will change. None the less the group is happy to get out of the weather. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug 7 2003

Good morning folks. We spent a nice calm day at Guadalupe. And to our surprise there was pretty decent fishing here for a change. We spent the morning on the north end where we scratched 40 yellowtail from 15 to 30 pounds and also picked up a 75 pound tuna on the kite. That backed off and we only hooked one more tuna that came off. We did see a number of better size fish boiling around and we will be up there to try it again. We finished our day on the south end hitting spots of smaller size tuna 15 to 30 pounds with just a couple bigger, maybe 35 pounds. We are going to spend the day at the Island and then go up the line. We will be able to fish until after lunch and then face the weather, that has been awful. We have really enjoyed the nice calm island. We will report again tomorrow.  Andy Cates

Aug 8 2003
Good morning folks. We decided to spend our last day at Guadalupe. With the reports from above of no bluefin and a lot of albacore we figured our best chance for a trophy fish would be at the Island. We did get a real nice yellowtail last night after dinner but that was about it. We started in the morning on the south end hoping to get some action on the smaller fish before going up were we caught that nice one yesterday. By 830 in the morning we only had a handful of small tuna so we worked our way up . We spent about three hours at the latitude spot for just a handful of yellowtail. We certainly saw that bigger fish and had one attack the kite but they just would not cooperate, We went to the north end and finished up we saw a couple of spots of 70 to 90 pound fish that did not cooperate as well. I don't know what its going to take. The water is 72 degrees and perfect conditions . They just wont bite yet. We are leaving on a 5 day trip today and the weather has laid down and the albacore are up . Hopefully the bluefin will be up as well. We will report again tomorrow.  Andy Cates

Aug.11, 03
Good morning folks. There is a summary of the WestCoastAngler 5 day:
Day 1
Well not much to report we left San Diego on Friday on a 5-day with a very good load of bait and we went 125 miles south of San Diego. The weather was fair a little chop  is all.
Day 2
We got to the area around 4 am and we had a nice grey bite we got a hand full of bluefin and for the better part of the morning was slow so we started working up. In the afternoon we got on some big spots of albie's
and bluefin on bait ball's they didn't bite that well but we still had a good afternoon and things started to slow down at about 3:30 pm. We also got some good yellowtail action on kelps.
Day 3
Well last night we went southeast, for 20 miles to where there was some sign of bluefin late yesterday. It's still pretty choppy and about 10 to 15 knots of wind. we had one bluefin to show for our gray bite so we got
to looking we got on some kelps and they  produced some nice yellows as well as some bluefin. The rest of the day went pretty slow for us as well as some of the other boats. We hope to find a bunch that want to
bite tomorrow.
Day 4
Good morning guys. We started in the same area as yesterday where there was little sign of bluefin. At first light we started looking, and stopped on a few fish marks for several bluefin. the next several stops were on kelps that produced good grade yellowtails and some dorado. Highlight of the day was a 50 pound bluefin for Michael Eppstien. We are going to try this area again tomorrow. We will check in again tomorrow, Dan Sansome and crew.

AUG 13 2003

Good morning folks. It sounds like we have our work cut out for us on this trip. Reports sound awful from the other boats. It sounds like the albacore are down and the bluefin are not biting. Hopefully that will change in the next couple of days, Kelp paddies have sustained the days with a few nicer size yellowtail. We are starting further to the west this morning along with a couple other boats. There were reports of albacore out this way so we thought we would spend a day checking it out. From what it sounds like we don't have much to lose. We will report again tomorrow,  Andy Cates

Aug 13 2003

Good evening fisherman...this is just a little synopsis of the last few days. this morning was a little windy however we had a nice bite at the kelps on some nice 15-25 lb yellowtail. We also had a late evening stop that gave us some steady action for a while and produced about 45-50 albacore.

Aug 14 2003

Good morning folks.
The weather hasn't really come down that much.   It's not bad but we do seem to always have at least 15 knots of wind.  Fishing was good today.  In the early morning we started with a kelp that was holding yellows.  It produced 70 nice size fish up to 25 pounds.  After we got off the kelp we picked up another 45 albacore and one bluefin.  The rest of the day we worked on the albacore, drifting on meter marks and jig strikes for steady action.  We sat on the sea anchor last night and enjoyed the comfort, so we'll probably do the same for tonight.  Hopefully this will also produce a school of bluefin and albacore for us in the morning.
We will report again tomorrow

Aug 15 2003
Good morning folks. We woke up yesterday morning on the sea anchor and fantastic albacore fishing. Only a few smaller size bluefin to go with it. At about 10:00 in the morning we had enough and decided to try and get on some bluefin tuna. After a couple of run ins with the aggressive albacore we moved out of the area in search of bluefin. We hit a few kelps the rest of the day that were not very productive and released some albacore. I posted a few pictures from the trip. Today we are in another area hoping for action on bluefin tuna. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug 16 2003
Good morning folks. We spent the day in an area where there had been some bluefin. The morning was frustrating after getting on two big schools that would not bite or stay with the boat. They boiled up good and we were confident, and then like a switch, they were gone. This happened twice. To make things even more frustrating the two boats next to us had fish that stuck and they caught fish. We did find a couple other schools. One that we caught 23 bluefin off of and another couple that wouldn't bite. We stopped on a few kelps and posted a picture of one of the nicer ones.

Aug 17 2003
Today we leave on a 7 day trip . We will be going to Alijos rocks. I hope we get a good load of bait this trip the bait was poor. Andy Cates

Aug 18 2003
Good morning folks.
We left yesterday on a 7 day to alijos rocks. The bait situation was our first concerned and as of now things are
looking pretty good. The sardines look stabile and swimming in a nice pattern. We are looking to go into some 76 degree water so we are definitely not in the clear. The water now is 71 degrees and the bait looks good. This morning we will spend some time getting rigged up. Go over a few things about fishing the rocks and wahoo that we are hoping for. We will spend the afternoon looking for fish in the warmer water outside of Bonitos and Cedros. Check out a few kelps that might have Yellowfin on them or Dorado or even Wahoo. Just check out some new water. We will report again tomorrow. In the event we do not stop we will be at the Rocks tomorrow morning.

Aug 19 2003
Good morning folks.
Yesterday wound up being a day of travel. We saw a couple of schools of smaller bluefin in the morning and then
not much the rest of the day. There is a lot of 71 degree water with no change or bait in it. This morning we popped into 74.5 degree water. We will look for kelps on our way to the rocks and if we don't stop we will arrive at 800 in the morning. We will have more to report tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug 19 2003

We've been having some problems with the server network, so we telephoned in our report for today.  The weather is great at Alijos.  Fishing isn't wide-open but everyone has been extremely happy with the quality of the fish that we've been getting.  Over 40 wahoo so far and we've gotten close to 100 yellowfin in the 70 to 100 pound range.  It's really hard to leave fish of this quality, so we'll probably stay here through tomorrow and see how things develop.  We've got a few really nice pictures of today's action, and we'll post them as soon as the server network gets straightened up.

Aug 20 2003
Good morning folks.
We arrived at the rocks at 900 in the morning. We trolled around for Wahoo and had a few short stops picking up about a dozen nice size fish. The sign of good grade tuna tempted us to get the anchor down and tuna fish. We made a couple different anchor jobs just to check things out. We decided on a spot and had a nice steady afternoon. Finishing off with 50 tuna and 14 wahoo for the day. The tuna were 70 to 100 pounds and stronger than you normally see. A lot of people got broken off in the rocks and all around heavy casualties. Line breaking, hooks pulling, you name it, it happened. We don't see all that much fish here , but what we do see is pretty good grade. We had good success with catching squid last night, we will hopefully put them to use.

I put up pictures of Dave and Dylan Malmberg ,Jeff Johnson, Jerry Goldstein and one of 2nd captain Julio Ochoa bringing over a nice wahoo for Jay Johnson. We hope for another nice day here. By the way the weather is very nice
P.S Eric Reinfeild would like to wish his wife Linda a happy anniversary
and send his love

Aug 21 2003
Good morning folks.
With all the sign we had seen yesterday we were hoping for better today. The fish were off the edge most off the day and there were problems with sharks. We scratched 31 tuna and 29 wahoo for the day. We had an evening bite that lasted until after dark that provided some action at sundown. The sharks get on you and eat the fish at color to make it frustrating. We are just now leaving the bank below the rocks . We did not see anything and only got one yellowtail there last night. Hopefully the fish are on the shallow today and are in the mood to bite. I put a picture up of Rick Shed with a nice wahoo gaffed by 2nd Capt. Julio Ochoa. We will report again tomorrow.

Aug 22 2003
Good morning folks
We started out at San Pablo for yellows. We made it all the way up to the South end of Cedros and saw the same awful conditions the whole way. Warm coffee colored water or green at best . We stopped on what looked like yellows and started getting these giant squid. We caught enough for fried calamari and then left .We did get a
couple yellows but they were not as interesting as the squid. We posted a picture of the guys holding up their squid. We caught a few more yellows at Natividad and then made bait at the South end of Cedros The bait session was very good . We loaded up and are ready for today. Today we are hoping to get on some Bluefin and put this mackerel to use. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates

Aug 23 2003
Good morning folks.
We spent the day offshore yesterday looking for blue fin and then yellowfin in the afternoon. The weather was rough and the fish were down we got a few small tuna and yellows on kelps. A lot of scatted jig strikes on skip jack and no albacore. The boats to the west reported rough weather and poor fishing as well. Hopefully things straighten out for our next trip. We have covered a lot of water the past couple of days for not much fish .
Conditions down around Cedros and bonitos were awful and no sign of yellowfin until we got up by San Martin . hopefully things straighten out soon. We will report again tomorrow.

Aug 25 2003
Good evening folks. Today was our first fishing day of our longtime annual charter with Ono Custom Rods.  Their charters are always fun and have a wide range of "talent". We tried are luck in an area were there had been some big bluefin seen. First thing in the morning we stopped on a school of bigger fish. We hooked 4 of them and landed only one with 8 albacore mixed in. The rest of the day was very slow.

The fish popped up in the afternoon and we saw some nice schools but that was about it. We did have a stop on nice size albacore right at dark to end with some action. Charles Tanaka was the lucky angler to land his 100 pound bluefin on 40 pound test. We will be at Guadalupe tomorrow, the Lupe is a regular destination for Ono's charters. Hopefully we have a day of action. We will report again tomorrow night, Andy Cates

Aug 26 2003
Good evening folks. We spent the day at Guadalupe and had action for most of the day. In the morning we fished on the anchor at the south end and had 65 yellowfin before lunch and then it died. Most of the fish are 20 to 35 pounds although we did see some better size fish boiling around. Calvin Benton picked off this nicer size fish in the morning. The rest of the day we spent hitting breezers of yellowfin out off the edge. We ended up with 107 yellowfin and we just started to get a couple of yellowtail at dark. Tonight we will try for squid and then anchor up for a yellowtail night bite. Hopefully it goes as planned We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug 27 2003
Good evening folks .
We had another nice day at Guadalupe. The numbers were not as high but there were more quality fish today. We ended the day with 67 yellowfin and still fishing getting a couple of yellows right now. We had 18 of the quality fish as shown in the pictures and the remainder were 20 to 35 pounds. At 2:00 PM it was over and we went looking for spots. We hit one with the smaller fish and then started to work up the Island to get in position for the next day. Tomorrow we will be in the albacore/bluefin area trying to finish off our trip with a hit with more action. We will report again tomorrow.  Andy Cates

Aug 28 2003
good evening folks.
We had a slow morning up until lunch when we got on a school of albacore that turned into bluefin. We ended up drifting along for a few hours picking off 40 bluefin and 50 albacore. The bluefin were 25 to 40 pounds with the exception of some bigger fish that got on us. 60 to 80 pounds were the average of the 16
bigger fish we were able to land. Several of the fish were caught on the kite and made it easier for the angler on the heavy gear. We left that stop and got on another school of bluefin right before dark. 25 to 35 pounders that bit good until dark. We had another 40 fish and then called it a trip. I posted a couple of pictures of the blue fin. The fish are a little funny looking because we gill and gut them before we put them in the fresh catch tank for 5 star to process. We are starting the fresh catch technique on this trip and it will be available on 5 day trips and less. We will be leaving on a 4 day trip tomorrow. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug. 30th
Good evening everyone. We are having computer problems so I am calling the reports in for this trip. Today your horseshoe was not pointed in the correct direction.  Our luck ran out today. Tough day of catching, we managed to get a handful of Bluefin and about 3 dozen albacore for the day.  Long hard day for not much.

Aug. 31st
Well today our horseshoe was doing what it is suppose to do. It was full of luck...We hit the mother load on bluefin today with @ 125 fish as well as 50 Albacore, and still its only 7 PM and we have fish hanging. Everything is being put down as 100% fresh catch on this trip. sea ya tomorrow, Andy Cates
