Aug 2 2002
Good morning folks, We started at 150 miles in hopes of some Bluefin and yellows on kelps. We are picking away at the yellows but only one Bluefin so far. We are going to stay in this area for the rest of the day . Hopefully we can find that lucky kelp. The weather is fine but the fog is making it hard to find the kelps. Maybe it will lift later and give us a better chance. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates
Aug 3 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday ended up a nice day After finally getting
on a school of Bluefin we managed to pick all afternoon. The fishing was
steady as we always had at least a couple of fish on with occasional flurries.
The grade is nice 30 to 45 pounds for the most part with some bigger ones
mixed in up to 65 pounds. Not much albacore to speak of in that area. So far
this morning we are getting action on albacore and some smaller Bluefin mixed
in. Those 15 to 35 pounders. The morning bite lasted for a couple of hours,
hopefully we can keep going like this the rest of the day. We will report
again tomorrow, Andy Cates
Aug 5 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday we sat on a school of Bluefin for most of
the day. As the fish built and gathered so did our hopes of them biting.
They never did get with it One at a time was the best we could do regardless
of the amount of fish boiling around and showing on the machines. We managed
to pick off 57 Bluefin and a few albacore to go along with our long drift.
After the great action we had the day before on albacore this actually
worked out fine . There were a lot of fish lost due to guys dropping down in
line test . Most of the fish were 25 to 40 pounds with a few bigger mixed in .
Today we will be leaving on a 5 day trip. We will report again tomorrow.
Andy Cates.
Aug 5 2002
Good afternoon everyone. We are headed out on the annual 5 day Ono
Custom Rod Charter. Things at the bait receiver looked good, and we
got all the bait we needed; mostly cured sardines and some anchovies.
We are headed down to the promise land tomorrow. Things down there
sounded promising today. Everyone is rigged and ready, so we will
report tomorrow with all the latest fish info. The weather is good as
well. Until then, keep your lines tight. -Jeff DeBuys
Aug 6 2002
Good evening everyone. Here is the fishing report for Aug 6th. Today we got
on a kelp first thing this morning, and drifted all day on it. It was a
typical all day plunker bite, with some good action at times. We ended up
with 200 mixed fish, the majority being Bluefin tuna (140 fish) and
yellowtail (65 fish). The overall grade on the Bluefin tuna is great, as
most fish are 30 to 45 lbs., with a few bigger ones and a few smaller ones.
The yellows are stock 14 to 18 lb. fish. We are going to spend tomorrow here
in hopes of another fine day like today. The weather is holding up, and it
makes for a fun day. We will report again tomorrow afternoon. Until then,
take care. -Jeff DeBuys
Aug 7 2002
Good afternoon to all. Here is the hot fishing report for August 7. This
morning we started where we left off yesterday. We did see some sign of blue
fin, but unfortunately, we did not get a bite. We hit a number of kelps
today to end up with 100 yellowtail in the 12-18 pound range. The weather,
on the other hand, has turned sour on us with 18 knots of wind and some
seas. We are heading up tonight to try for albies and blue fin tomorrow in a
new area, and hopefully the weather will come down so we can work. Signing
off... Capt. Jeff DeBuys
August 8 2002
Good Evening folks. Here is the happy fishing report for August 8th. Today
the fish cooperated and the weather was nice as well. We fished albies and
blue fin. We ended up with a day limit of the longfins and 24 blue fin tuna.
The best action was in the morning by far, but we managed to scratch the
rest of the day. Tomorrow we are going to try for more albies in a new area
and we hope that there are some that are willing to bite. Wish us well, it's
the last day of our trip, we will report again tomorrow. Goodnight. Capt.
Jeff DeBuys

Aug. 11,2002
Good evening everyone, here is the report for August 11th. We departed San
Diego yesterday on a 4 day trip. We got a pretty decent load of sardines, and
headed south. After a safety and tackle seminar, we had everyone rigged up
properly. We were not quite to the area we wanted to start in the morning,
when we found a nice fat school of Bluefin tuna. The fish we saw at first were
80 lbers, but we went bendo for 4
hours on 90 to 140 lb. fish. I have to say we were under gunned for what was
in store for us. We really had our chances at some big beautiful fish. They
were just too much for our group of guys. We did manage to get 9 fish , 90 to
140 lbs. , along with limits of a good grade albacore. We had a nice day. We
will try it again tomorrow. Wish us lots of luck!! we will report tomorrow
p.m. sea ya , Jeff DeBuys
Aug. 12, 2002
Hello everyone, here is the report for august 12th. Today we concentrated
on the albacore for most of the day, and for the most part we only scratched
at them. They were good grade fish, but it was stop and go for the most part.
We ended up with 106 fish for the day. We had some Bluefin sightings, but they
were reluctant to bite for us. Today is our last day, and we hope to end the
trip with a bang. The weather is still excellent, and that in itself is a
bonus. We will report at the end of the day. sea ya then. Jeff DeBuys.
Aug. 13, 2002
Good afternoon everyone, here is the latest report for us. August 13th.
Today we had a really fine day of fishing. We got on a school first thing this
morning, and what a biting son of a gun it was. We drifted until 2 p.m., and
then it was time to go home. The Bluefin were really a beautiful grade of
fish. they were 70 to 125 lbs. The albacore were also an excellent grade, most
18 to 35 lbs. We ended up having one of the best trips by far this year. I
would encourage anyone coming out here in the next few weeks to make sure you
are equipped with some heavy line and some 2 speed reels. You will do much
better in the long run , if you get the right school. Our tally for today is
as follows, limits of albacore, and 29 Bluefin tuna. The tally for the
trip is as follows, limits of albacore for 31 people, and 39 Bluefin tuna, at
least 25 fish over 100 lbs. Here are a few pictures from today. I hope this
kind of fishing holds up for a while!! We will be in San Diego at 7:00 am Wed
the 14th. we'll talk to everyone later. Jeff DeBuys

Good afternoon folks. Well, things have slowed down a lot here today.
With a few spots of Bluefin seen and not much caught things seem to be down
today. The albacore fishing dropped way off here today. We have managed to
catch 95 albacore so far and 1 decent size Bluefin about 75 pounds and a few
yellows off kelps. Maybe things will perk up here this evening. We will
report again tomorrow. Andy Cates
Aug 16 2002
Good afternoon folks .
Wow! Things are similar again to yesterday here. The albacore fishing is
scratchy at best with 85 so far today. A couple of kelp paddies produce some
decent yellowtail, but for the most part the fish just seem to be down. On a
good note the weather is good and we are managing to stay busy but really no
real big hits around just steady fishing. Yesterday we ended up with 145
albacore not to shabby and it looks like we might do the same here today.
Who knows maybe the fish will come up and we will have a good afternoon. The
Bluefin have with the exception of some small ones not been seen. But maybe
later on this evening. We will report again tomorrow, Andy Cates
Aug 17 2002
Good afternoon folks. We never did much more on the albacore yesterday. We
ended up with 95 albies and 41 yellowtail off the kelps. Late in the evening
we did have a shot on that bigger size Bluefin . Unfortunately y we did not
hook that many and only landed a couple. None the less at least we did get a
chance . Not a big school but enough to get a few fish. We moved up to the
100 mile area last night . So far this morning we have drifted up 29
Bluefin, biggest one about 55 pounds and only a few albacore to go with it.
The bite started on a kelp so we got a dozen nice yellows right off the bat.
Slow but steady until they all backed off. We are just about ready to get
going and find another . Hopefully we bump into something good here this
afternoon. Andy Cates
Aug 18 2001
Good morning folks. We ended up finding another kelp yesterday. It started
out with yellowtail and then turned into Bluefin. Between this kelp and the
one this morning we scratched 91 Bluefin , 45 albacore and 30 nice
yellowtail. The Bluefin were decent size, with a few up to 55 pounds. Most
30 to 40 with some smaller ones in the evening. We will be at the dock at
830 this morning and then leaving on a 7 day trip
Andy Cates
Aug 19 2002
Good afternoon folks. We left on a 7 day trip to Alijos rocks. We decided to
spend the first morning looking for the big Bluefin. After hitting kelps for
only a few yellowtail for a better part of the morning. We decided we had
better start working our way down. After a couple hours of looking we did
see a decent spot of Bluefin, got up on it hooked one and then they swam
away. Ken Davis landed the only one hooked, about a 120 pounder. We have a
lot of time left today maybe we will get lucky and get a school. We will
report again tomorrow. Andy Cates
Aug 21 2002.
Good morning folks. We arrived at Alijos rocks yesterday at 3:00 in the
afternoon. We started off fishing tuna on the anchor, We figured we would
get loosened up before we tried for the wahoo. After getting the anchor down
the wahoo and tuna attacked. We had 8 wahoo right out of the gate and then
stayed very steady on 35 to 50 pound tuna until dark. It wasn't wide
open but we always had 10 fish on at one time. Only a couple of yellowtail
during all of that and only one yellowtail last night. The only bad thing
down here is the sharks. We did have a problem with them but were still able
to fish on the anchor. it doesn't look like the kite will work for us
with these sharks around. Today we are going to fish tuna in the morning and
then focus on wahoo for the middle of the day. We will report again
tomorrow. Andy Cates

Aug 22 2002
Good morning folks. We had excellent fishing yesterday at the rocks. The
tuna fishing was very steady all morning. It is not wide open but we always
had 10 or 12 fish going at one time. The tuna are an average of 45 pounds,
some bigger up to 60 pounds but very few smaller than 40 pounds. Beautiful
fish. We spent from 10:00 to 2:00 trying for wahoo. We managed to get 32 out
of various stops. No big stops just a few here a few there. The size is
spectacular. With some fish possibly 85 pounds there were some cheers to be
had. I posted a couple of pictures of some of the average size fish. We are
going to fish tuna this morning for a little bit and then focus on the wahoo
the rest of the day. We plan on leaving here this afternoon and possibly go
to Cedros. We will report again tomorrow . Andy Cates
Aug 23 2002
Good morning folks. Yesterday was another great day at the Rocks. We
fished tuna until we were limited out and then focused on the wahoo. Once
again the grade of tuna down here is very nice . About a 45 pound average
with some up to 60 pounds and a few as light as 35 , but not very many. The
Rocks produced more good size wahoo for us finishing off with 32 for the
morning. After trolling till lunch we decided to go up the line and fish
yellowtail at Cedros. So far things are working out good. A couple hundred
yellowtail or the morning . Good action on 12 to 20 pound yellows. About a
15 pound average. We are going to work our way up the Island and possibly
finish the day at Benitos. We will let you know how it goes tomorrow. I put
a picture of Dick and his son Neil Langolis up. One of Neils better size
wahoo for the trip. We will report again tomorrow. Andy Cates
Aug 24 2002
Good morning folks. After a morning of good yellowtail fishing at Cedros. We
decided to head over to Benitos for the afternoon. The conditions at Benitos
were fantastic. We only fish one spot and didn't give the rest of the island
a real check but 68.5 degree blue water was an indication of possibly some
good hits to come on yellowtail. We fished in the" Gap " and scratched on
some of the bigger size yellows, some up to 35 pounds and really nice
calicos up to 6 and 7 pounds biting the surface iron. The mackerel we caught
in the morning worked great here on the bigger yellows using the heavier
gear to get them out of the weeds. We ended up scratching 30 nice yellows
and released that many big Calicos. The island looked good and looks
probable for the next trip. We are on our way to San Martin to finish off
with hopefully some halibut. We will fish till after lunch and then break
down our gear for the way home. The weather has really come up and we are
looking forward to the calm lee side of the island. We will report again
tomorrow. Andy & Jeff and the crew of the Red Rooster III

Aug 24 2002
Good afternoon folks. We are all wrapped up and getting ready to go home. We
managed 13 halibut at San Martin this morning and we posted a couple of
pictures of them. Nice size fish and it looks like we are going to have surf
and turf tonight for dinner. Halibut and steak, sounds pretty good. We are
leaving on a five day trip tomorrow and we will be in at 800 in the morning.
We will see you then Andy Cates and crew of the red rooster.
Aug 26 2001
Good afternoon folks. We started our 5 day trip in the albacore area and so
far things are working out fine. With limits today on albies. We have had good
action on albacore all day. We have tried a few kelps and picked of a few
smaller Bluefin and yellows. Hopefully we get a hit this afternoon on the
Bluefin. We will report again later, Andy Cates
Aug 27 2002
Good afternoon folks. Yesterday ended up very nice for us. We ended up getting
the all albacore we could handle, decent size fish , 15 to 22 pounds and bit
pretty good in the evening. So far today we really haven't done to much. We
rolled up to were some guys had some Bluefin and as of now haven't got the
right school. We did get a dozen for the early morning. That is certainly not
going to cut it. We have our work cut out for us this afternoon so with a lot
of luck hopefully we will find a school that will want to bite. We will report
again tomorrow, Andy Cates
Aug 28 2002
Good morning folks. We never did find the right school yesterday. We had a few
decent fish in the evening but that was about it. Unfortunately, there were
really some good stops to be had, most of the other boats in the area had good
fishing. So far this morning we have been drifting on 25 to 50 pound Bluefin.
We have 50 out of our morning drift and hopping to continue. Things have
slowed way down here lately but we are hopping for another shot here later.
The better size Bluefin seem to be biting in the afternoon so hopefully we can
get on those later. For right now we will get what we can out of this. We will
report again later. Andy Cates
Aug 28 2002
Good morning folks, We ended up drifting for most of yesterday. After a good
hit for a 100 blue fin and 30 more albacore we decided to pick it up and look
for an evening hit. It didn't happen but we still ended up with a nice day.
Hopefully things will improve here this morning. The blue fin are not to be
found as they are playing hide and seek with the fleet. A few of us are going
out to the west right now in hopes of finding the big hit. I sure hope we
connect. We will report again later, Andy Cates
Aug. 31st.
Good evening folks, here is the fishing report for Aug 31st. We departed
San Diego yesterday with a good load of sardines and anchovies. We ran out to
the southwest for today, and found fishing pretty much scratchy for albacore.
The weather was good for this part of the ocean as well. We ended up with just
under 100 fish for today. We are going to a different location for tomorrow,
so wish us luck. We will report again
tomorrow. sea ya later. Jeff DeBuys
